BarcelonaOn the eve of the general strike called in the State for next November 11th, the number of unemployed is growing in Catalonia. Specifically, according to the data released this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labour, in the Principality there are 8,174 more unemployed in October than in September, which represents an increase of 2.48%. Compared to last October, unemployment is growing even more strongly: it is up 4.24%, which is equivalent to 13,751 more people without work than a year ago. In October, in total, there are 338,246 people unemployed in Catalonia. This trend contrasts with the rest of the State, where unemployment is decreasing in year-on-year terms.
Employment, on the other hand, continues to grow in the Principality. In relation to September, 29,540 people (+0.74%) were registered with Social Security, which pushed Catalan employment to a historical high of 4.03 million, as indicated by the figures from the Ministry of Social Security. If we look at the data from a year ago, the year-on-year variation is also positive (+3.86%), which translates into 149,917 more workers. It must be said, however, that Catalan affiliations during October were driven by the province of Barcelona, the only territory in the country that grew in terms of employment.
At the state level, a good employment trend is also being maintained. The number of Social Security affiliates is also breaking records in the State and stood at 22.6 million. Thus, in the last month, 186,612 employed people were added. Furthermore, according to data from the Ministry of Labour, Spanish unemployment rose by 43,128 people in October (1.81%) and stood at 2.4 million, which represents the lowest figure for an October since 2007.
