EasyJet lands at Girona airport with two new routes to the United Kingdom

GironaThe Girona-Costa Brava airport continues to grow. Looking ahead to 2027, it adds to its flight offerings a new first-rate company that will operate on the Girona runways. It is the British EasyJet, one of the most important low-cost airlines in the world, with 370 aircraft and nearly 100 million passengers annually. It will operate two new routes to the United Kingdom, the country with which Girona airport has the most connections.

The first route will fly to Liverpool between the months of March and October, with two weekly frequencies and an offer of 9,000 seats. The second will connect Girona with London-Gatwick starting in the month of June, also with two weekly frequencies, except for the months of July and August, when three will be offered. In this case, there will be 8,000 seats available.

Until now, London was already on the radar for flights from the Girona airport, but Liverpool is debuting as a new destination. The tickets, which can already be purchased, start from 95 euros for the city in the northeast of England and from 117 euros for the journey to the capital.

The arrival of EasyJet is the result of an agreement between the company and the Girona Provincial Council, the Government of Catalonia, and the Hospitality Guild, integrated within the framework of GROwing, the working table established to promote the Girona airport. The arrival of the multinational allows for new attractive destinations to be offered to the residents of Girona and its surroundings, but above all, it is part of the economic strategy to attract British tourism to the city and the Costa Brava, as well as to reinforce the business vocation of the region.

This is so because EasyJet, in addition to being an airline, also works as a tour operator and is the second-largest company in the sector in the United Kingdom. It already has, therefore, a market study with British clients interested in coming to visit the Girona regions and has begun to partner with local hotels to offer packages that combine flights and stays.

In this way, for the company, Girona represents an opportunity in itself and not a commercial strategy linked to Barcelona, as a possible "fourth runway" for El Prat airport, now that its expansion is in question. "Unlike the origin of low-cost carriers, our business model is based on flying as close as possible to the client's final or original destination. Our main vocation is not to bring people to Barcelona from Girona, but rather they are two destinations with their own development," points out Javier Gándara, general manager of EasyJet in Southern Europe and global director of public policy for the company.

Diversify and deseasonalize

Aside from EasyJet, other companies operate at Girona airport, with Ryanair as the main operator, as well as other lesser-known airlines that concentrate their activity during the summer season. "It is a very important agreement because it is necessary to diversify, not to depend exclusively on one or two companies, but to have a range of them, and also to de-seasonalize, since with EasyJet there is the intention to grow and also to reinforce the winter proposal," explains Miquel Noguer, president of the Girona Provincial Council.

The horizon, according to those responsible for the airport, is to continue expanding the offer within the framework of the country's airport strategy. Among the projects being considered for the Girona facilities is an AVE station and the creation of a corporate terminal, to favor major events in the area, such as the prestigious Ryder Cup golf tournament, scheduled for 2031.
