Catalonia leads the Spanish technology ecosystem: 2,350 companies and approximately €5 billion in revenue

It surpasses the Community of Madrid in the number of tech companies and employs more than 36,000 workers, according to a report.

BarcelonaCatalonia is once again the autonomous community with the largest number of technological and innovative companies in Spain, according to theRegional report of tech and innovative companies 2025 published by Ecosistema Startup, one of the databases of start-ups and greater investment. Currently, with data updated to May 2025, Catalonia has 2,351 active technology companies, ahead of the Community of Madrid (2,189), and registers significant growth compared to the same period in 2024, when 2,064 companies were recorded.

This increase is not only reflected in volume, but also in impact: according to this report, between May 2024 and May 2025, the Catalan technological ecosystem generated 36,718 direct jobs and a combined turnover of €4.857 billion. On average, each company generates fifteen jobs and exceeds €2 million in revenue. Thus, the Catalan business fabric is structured into three main types of companies: 1,398 start-ups which total 8,177 jobs and 449 million euros in turnover; 142 scale-ups which employ 10,128 people and reach 1.253 billion euros and 810 technology SMEs, which generate 18,413 jobs and exceed 3.155 billion euros in revenue.

In territorial terms, Barcelona stands out as the main hub innovation, with 1,555 active companies of this type, more than 27,800 jobs and a turnover of more than 3,368 million euros. It is followed as relevant hubs by Sant Cugat del Vallès (44 companies) and Girona (41), which reinforce the decentralization of innovation within the Catalan territory.

The report also highlights a key milestone: 2024 was the best year in history for investment in start-ups Catalan companies, with €1.797 billion raised in 111 deals, more than double the figure in 2023 (€662 million). Large rounds led by companies such as Sequra, ID Finance, Impress, and TravelPerk explain this trend. Since 2016, Catalonia has accumulated more than €7 billion in investment in technology companies and has established itself as the main focus of capital attraction in Spain. Regarding sectors, the healthcare sector leads the Catalan ecosystem with 221 companies, 4,673 jobs, and €356.5 million in turnover.
