From the sea
The crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic and its thousand islands are heavenly for those who want to enjoy the last warm days of the year. Croatia is an ideal place for sailing, cruising the coast by sailboat, or discovering the country from the sea. The nautical season extends from March to November, which allows for sailing during a good part of the year.
With more than 1,244 islands, islets, reefs, and crags, sailing through its waters becomes an indelible experience in the eyes of those who live it. Accessing practically virgin corners and heavenly beaches makes sailing a unique and unforgettable experience.
Lojena, Opat, Ravni Žakan, and Vrulje are some of the spectacular beaches that are part of the Kornati National Park. On the island of Kornat, there are historical enclaves accessible from the sea, such as the fortress of Tureta. The uninhabited island of Piškera or the fortifications of Vela Panitula are also striking places for the traveler. Nature in its purest state invites you to get lost among islands, islets, and unique landscapes.
Through history
Croatia has a great cultural, historical and architectural legacy recognized internationally. In Split, Diocletian's Palace, originally built as the residence of the Roman emperor, is one of the best-preserved Roman monumental complexes. Its architecture reflects the Roman influence on early Christian, Byzantine and early medieval art and is one of the best-preserved monumental buildings in the country. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius is, also, one of the oldest in the world, in the center of the capital.
The historic center of Trogir hides legacies of incalculable historical value. Throughout the centuries, the city has been under Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Hungarian rule and each of these civilizations has left a visible mark on the identity of its historic center. The Cathedral of Saint Lawrence is, precisely, one of the great architectural treasures of the city.
The pearl of the Adriatic
The old city of Dubrovnik, known as the "pearl of the Adriatic", is a must-see stop. Walking along the nearly two kilometers of walls that surround the city to contemplate it from a privileged perspective is an opportunity to see the beauty of its fortress. Stroll along the Stradun, the main artery of the old town made of shiny limestone, which connects the Pile and Ploče gates. Its cafes, shops, and vibrant nightlife wrap around the visitor. The Church of Saint Blaise, the Sponza Palace, the Franciscan monastery, or Orlando's Column are discovered while walking.
Zadar, in the north of the Dalmatia region, preserves some of the most important fortification elements of the historical defensive system and is another route to take. The Land Gate is imposing. It is one of the most beautiful Renaissance monuments in Zadar, which connects the outer fortress of Forte to the city center, built by the Venetians.
A natural paradise
Krka National Park is another of Croatia's most incredible natural environments. The Krka River, as it passes through the region, has shaped a landscape of canyons, lakes, travertine barriers, and spectacular waterfalls. Skradinski Buk, a waterfall 400 meters wide and 46 meters high, with thousands of drops falling every second, is a wonder of nature, and sailing to the island of Visovac, in the lake of the same name, where there is a Franciscan monastery and the Church of Our Lady of Visovac, is an almost mystical experience.
Plitvice Lakes National Park, with sixteen lakes interconnected by waterfalls and walkways, draws an exceptional landscape, with Veliki Slap, the highest waterfall in the country, and the possibility of traveling by boat on Lake Kozjak, the largest in the park. It is the most beautiful and well-known national park in Croatia. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, its crystal-clear lakes, connected to each other by more than 92 waterfalls and set amidst a landscape of lush forests, make it a must-see. In constant transformation due to the continuous formation of travertine barriers, it always ends up surprising the traveler.
