The annual report from the AEA (European Automobile Association) has identified the most dangerous stretches of road in Spain, based on data from the five-year period 2019-2023. These stretches are at least ten times higher than the average danger index (IPM). According to the report, the human factor remains crucial, but the state of infrastructure maintenance cannot be underestimated. The report also calls on government authorities to implement the necessary measures for the proper maintenance of the most dangerous sections of road.

The Pyrenees, the black spot of the Catalan road network

The N-260, also known as the Eix Pirinenc, is by far the most dangerous road in Catalonia. It contains six of the ten most hazardous sections in the country. The fact that it is a conventional road with one lane in each direction, with sharp curves and steep inclines, and often adverse weather conditions, makes this road the biggest black spot on the Catalan road network. It is striking that the sections between the Toses pass and Alp, on the one hand, and the section between the parish of Hortó and Saulet—a stretch with many curves and beautiful scenery—on the other, concentrate a large proportion of the black spots on the Catalan road network. Interestingly, in the section where this conventional road has been widened into a dual carriageway (A-26, between Olot and Besalú), the average accident rate drops to standard levels or even below the average for the rest of the road network. Another black spot on the Catalan road network is the N-141 in the Aran Valley town of Bossòst. This section carries a very high volume of traffic—especially traffic heading towards France—with a conventional single-lane road design in each direction and challenging weather conditions for much of the year. Finally, it is worth highlighting the danger of the section at kilometer 163 of the N-230, at the entrance to Vielha. Once again, its mountainous terrain, high traffic volume, and unfavorable weather contribute to the danger of this stretch.

Driving tips in rain, snow and ice

The concentration of dangerous sections in the Pyrenees is also explained by the adverse weather during the winter months and the sudden summer storms. In this regard, it is very important to thoroughly prepare your car or motorcycle by checking the vehicle's fluid levels, windshield wipers, lighting system, battery, and the condition and pressure of the tires. Furthermore, it is highly advisable to fit winter tires directly in those areas of the country where winters are harsher, and to practice fitting snow chains to the drive wheels of your vehicle.

Once on the road, it's crucial to keep four basic elements in mind that significantly reduce the risk of an accident. It's important to maintain a safe following distance, avoid sudden steering or handlebar movements, try not to brake or accelerate abruptly, and above all, use common sense to adjust your speed to road and traffic conditions, especially in adverse weather.
