Regarding the cost of living

Life has a cost that we pay with work. But when working honestly the cost of living is unaffordable, we enter the dangerous territory of having nothing to lose. Will Trump's defeat serve to return to the basics?

Trump's huge defeat in Tuesday's midterm elections has been described as a tsunami. And it certainly is, because the earthquake continues to send waves, and it is sending them all over the world.

The United States are such a large sounding board that everything that happens there impacts the world and sets trends. And what has happened there, now? Well, that, finally, Trump's lies have been defeated by the truth of the facts. After years of managing to make his voters live in a parallel reality built on lies, the most important thing about what happened on Tuesday is that Americans stopped believing Trump to believe what their eyes were seeing, which is, basically, that they are economically suffocated.

And they held him responsible for the unbearable cost of living, especially because of the president's decisions, such as going to war against Iran under pressure from Netanyahu when, furthermore, it turns out that Trump reached the presidency assuring that the wasting of Americans' money on distant lands and wars was over. Americans have said enough and are waiting for solutions. It is a clamor in a good part of the world, including the Europe in which we live. Next Wednesday there is a general strike called in Spain, driven by the fact that many people cannot find a flat they can afford to go and live in. Today, French authorities will deploy 70,000 police officers and gendarmes in the face of a new day of protest over the rising cost of living and the deterioration of public services. In France, the origin of the protest was the unrest over the state of public education. Here we have had strikes and protests by teachers, and by doctors. There has been violence in France, in Germany... and in Barcelona. The defeat of Trump, of his businesses and those of his family and those of his billionaire financiers could be the indicator that we have entered a new state of political consciousness of a majority that has said enough.

And it has said enough to the unaffordable cost of living. And noting that, deep down, expressed this way, it is a proposal from within the system, reasonable, that does not want to break anything. When Americans vote for candidates who promise “affordability”, that is to say a cost of living that they can pay for with their usual income, they are not saying that they do not want to work, nor that they do not accept the logic of selling their labor force in exchange for a salary, they are saying that the enrichment of a very few is preventing a life project that has been possible for several decades, based on the idea that if you work hard, your life will be better. If you study, doors to better salaries will open for you. There are many people, especially in the United States, who cannot imagine a life outside of capitalism, but who now capitalism has placed at the limit of their subsistence, understood as having access to basics like being able to rent an apartment or having school and healthcare that work. There are many people who thought they would never be excluded and now feel they are, they or their children, especially there, where there is no universal public healthcare paid for with everyone's taxes.

We all know that life has a cost, which we basically pay for with work. But when, working honestly, even in jobs that require years of study, life has an unaffordable cost, then the system blows up. And we enter the dangerous territory of having nothing to lose. Will Trump's defeat be enough to return to the basics?Trump
