Finally, during the early hours and morning of Monday, it snowed at low elevations in the Lleida region and the inland areas of Tarragona and Barcelona, and even along the coast (you can see some images of the snowfall at the end of this report). The current concern is the freezing of this accumulated snow, with the inherent dangers. This period of snow at low elevations is now over, and the focus will shift to sunshine and intense cold, with two freezing nights expected both on the coast and inland, likely bringing some of the lowest temperatures of the winter.

Tuesday: intense cold

After a snowy Monday, the Three Kings have arrived with an intense cold unlike anything we've seen for this time of year in years, with frosts gradually approaching the coast and potentially reaching the shoreline in regions like Baix Empordà and northern Maresme. Maximum temperatures will also be significantly lower, reaching 10°C or slightly lower along the coast, and between 3°C and 7°C across much of the interior. Some light patches of high cloud will appear, although the Balearic Islands and Alicante will experience more developed cloud cover, bringing a few showers. Additionally, the mistral and tramontana winds will blow across the entire region.

Wednesday: freezing early morning

We'll leave the Christmas and Three Kings' Day holiday period with very pleasant and stable weather, far removed from the snow of this Monday, which was still marked by a night when the mercury hit rock bottom and frost returned everywhere. Only some stretches of the coast will avoid dropping below 0°C, but inland temperatures will frequently range between -3 and -7°C, much lower in the Pyrenees. There will be intervals of high and mid-level clouds, with a risk of some snow showers on the northern slopes of the western Pyrenees, and no more strong winds in the Empordà and Terres de l'Ebre regions.

Snowfall report

Snow began to fall in parts of the Lleida region and the Segarra plateau on Sunday night, but it spread more widely during the early hours of Monday. The snow level plummeted, and snow was seen at all elevations in the western and southern half of the country, and above 100-200 meters in the central region. From 5-6 a.m. onwards, the snowfall settled in the Lleida region, thanks to persistent precipitation and a drop in temperature, and also in parts of central Catalonia. In some areas, the snow depth exceeded 10 centimeters, in places like Igualada and Santa Coloma de Queralt.
