BarcelonaOver the past few hours, a pocket of cold air descending from northern Europe has swept across the region, bringing showers to areas of Girona, Barcelona, the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees, and some stretches of the southern coast. The change in weather was sudden in these areas on Sunday afternoon and evening, following a generally mild and sunny first weekend of spring. Snow also fell again in the mid and high elevations of the Pyrenees. Between yesterday and early this morning, accumulations of 10 to 15 liters per square meter were recorded in the northern parts of Girona, and 1 to 8 liters per square meter in many other areas, accompanied by some local thunderstorms. In contrast, not a drop fell in the western part of the country and much of the southern half. Today, World Meteorological Day, the weather won't clear completely, but very little rain is expected, and from tomorrow onwards, sunshine and calm conditions will generally return.

Monday the 23rd in the morning.

Monday: last showers and lower temperatures

The unsettled weather will lessen today, but it won't disappear completely. It will be a day of variable skies, with more sunshine towards the west. In the morning, there may be some scattered showers in the Terres de l'Ebre region, with a chance of isolated showers in the northeast and on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees. In the afternoon, there will be a few more light and scattered showers in areas of the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees, Central Catalonia, the pre-coastal region, and the mountain passes. Nothing major. The snow level will rise from the initial 1,300 meters to 1,700 meters. Northerly winds will blow at the extremes of the region, with a bit of a blizzard at higher elevations in the Pyrenees. North of Cap de Creus, the tramontana wind will create a rough sea. Temperatures will range between 14°C and 19°C.

Changeable weather this week

Throughout the week we'll have a bit of everything. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures will rise significantly, making for pleasant and enjoyable days, with the high-pressure system playing a key role. But on Thursday afternoon and Friday, a sudden change in the weather is possible, bringing colder temperatures and snow to the Pyrenees, along with a significant drop in the snow level, with snowfall down to 1,000 meters, or even slightly lower. We'll transition from spring to winter, with the cold being more noticeable in the inland regions. The Tramontana wind will strengthen between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, with gusts exceeding 100 km/h at Cap de Creus and in the Pyrenees, where blizzards could blow strongly at higher elevations.

The start of spring, therefore, will bring us days of everything, with calm and good weather, but also sudden weather changes and a rollercoaster of temperatures, as this season of the year usually brings us.
