The goalkeeper who has made us feel ashamed
It is incredible how a moment you have been waiting for years can be tarnished. Those of us from Sabadell wished for a promotion like the one experienced a few days ago. It had been more than 30 years since we achieved a promotion at home. The team and the city deserved a day like this, but everything ended up very dirty with mud when the goalkeeper Diego Fuoli, who has been one of the pillars of the team, decided to start a chant against Pedro Sánchez. A large part of the young people present in the square continued it. Then there was an uncomfortable silence... and even more people booed. The magic had been broken. What happened next can no longer be controlled.
I speak in the first person because Sabadell is the only club I am a member of. It affects me. It saddens me. It hurts me to see how we become a toy on social media in the hands of political parties. The club condemned it, but it doesn't matter: you have already lost. Fuoli says he wanted to make a "little joke". It's hard to believe, honestly. He covered himself in glory. I hope the footballers understand how they can harm an entity that pays their salary with actions like this. The club's image has been damaged. Besides, it is a demonstration of ignorance, since the mayor of the PSC had just received you. You sing it from the balcony that overlooks her office.
It is clear that you can be critical of Pedro Sánchez, but it was not the time or place and, above all, it was not the way. It is one thing to criticize and quite another to insult. Sabadell has years of good work behind it, managing to connect with the city, filling the stadium, building bridges with institutions, and issuing statements against intolerance and fascism. We have made them, look for them. When banners appear in favor of public education or asking to protect natural spaces, we are not news. What can we do.
We have to be news because of Fuoli's inadmissible chant. A goalkeeper who I suppose will leave. But the club will continue. And we will continue in the right direction. We are a thousand times better than years ago. You cannot control who approaches the square on a day like this, as happens with the young people who sang against Sánchez. Yes, intolerance rears its head everywhere. And it is everyone's task to stop it. My club tries, even if many ignore it, to get along well with other Catalan fan bases, providing them with tickets, defending positive values. And the arlequinada social mass also does it, as the fan clubs have demonstrated this year. But four intolerant people always make more noise than good people. That's how it is. Whether we like it or not. And not only because of Fuoli's chant: there are too many people who celebrate successes by insulting other clubs.
It happens at Sabadell and it happens at other teams, it's everyone's problem. A good part of those who now talk about Sabadell without even knowing where we play, will soon find another topic to criticize and will forget about us. But I invite them to come one day to Nova Creu Alta and discover a club that wants to do things right. I myself offer to pay for the vermouth before going to the stadium, because despite the shame I felt on Saturday because of Fuoli, I am prouder than ever to be part of the club where my grandmother was already a member. We are on the right track. And we will enjoy a promotion that has cost us a lot.
