Renewable energy, Naturgy's commitment to achieving the energy transition
The energy company is working towards the goal of achieving, by 2027, nearly 47% of its installed capacity from renewable sources.

The implementation of renewable energies has become established as a fundamental element in the path toward the decarbonization of the energy system. These clean sources not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also provide benefits such as greater energy sovereignty and lower electricity costs for consumers.
In the face of current challenges, Naturgy is committed to renewable energies to support the energy transition. To enable the transformation of the energy model, the company has a business strategy based on promoting these green energies, as well as a sustainability model that guides its actions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. In fact, the company is working with a clear objective: to achieve nearly 47% of installed capacity.
More than 11% growth in renewables
Naturgy currently has 170 renewable energy facilities operating in Spain, 13 of which will be commissioned in 2024. Of the total, 96 are wind technology facilities, 24 are photovoltaic plants, and 50 are hydroelectric plants. However, the company contributed 10,797 GWH of renewable energy to the Spanish electricity system during 2024, representing an increase of 11% compared to the previous year. Specifically, solar technology production increased by 27%, hydropower by 15%, and wind power by 6%. All of this is equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 3.2 million households. This increase in production was accompanied by an increase in installed capacity in Spain, with 271 new MW, exceeding 5.3 GW of operating capacity.
Thanks to the energy produced by these facilities, the energy company managed to reduce more than six million tons of polluting and greenhouse gas emissions, which is equivalent to removing 2.55 million cars from circulation in one year.
The commitment of Naturgy in Spain for renewables
Naturgy continues its commitment to promoting the growth of renewable energy, with notable projects such as the construction of its main photovoltaic plant in Spain, Campo de Arañuelo, in Extremadura. This facility, with a capacity of 300 MW, will cover an area of 290 hectares and generate nearly 514 GWh/year of clean energy. The project, with an investment of over €175 million, will create more than 1,000 jobs.
In addition, Naturgy has launched three new photovoltaic plants in Extremadura, capable of supplying renewable energy to 94,000 homes. It has expanded its presence in the Region of Murcia with its first photovoltaic plant (which will supply energy to 21,000 homes), and has launched the project to power 40,000 homes.
Naturgy has committed to increasing its renewable energy operating capacity internationally by more than 30% by 2027. To this end, the company will invest more than €1.2 billion over the next two years with the goal of reaching 9.5 GW of green energy generation capacity. These are the levers:
-
Increase the flexibility of your dossier:
It will do so by increasing wind energy projects and battery projects for solar photovoltaic hybridization.
-
Focus efforts:
The company will focus on stable geographies with projects in an advanced stage of development.
-
Improve efficiency:
They will carry out extensive control of the value chain and operations to improve efficiency across all assets.
Sustainability, the basis of the company's DNA
Naturgy's firm commitment to renewable energy is also a commitment to a more sustainable energy mix, an energy transition that takes into account the environmental impact and the economic and social objectives of value creation and growth for all its businesses. Thus, the company remains committed to its ESG (environmental, social, and governance) objectives.
Since 2017, the company has achieved a 30% reduction in its total carbon footprint, a 39% decrease in direct greenhouse gas emissions, and a 36% reduction in the CO2 intensity associated with electricity generation.
Commitment to the energy transition
The company reaffirms its commitment to the energy transition through the creation of renewable projects, with an installed capacity of 7.3 GW internationally. Globally, the company has achieved that wind energy represents half of its green generation capacity, with 3.6 GW installed in countries such as Spain, Mexico, Chile, and Australia. Regarding solar energy, Naturgy has 1.4 GW of installed capacity in Brazil, Chile, the United States, Australia, and Spain, and regarding hydropower, it has a capacity of 2.2 GW, mostly in Spain.
With this ambitious strategy, Naturgy is not only making progress towards achieving climate neutrality, but also consolidating its leadership as a key player in the global energy transition.
