The labyrinth of summer roadworks in Barcelona: Muntaner cut off for a year and fewer lanes on the Ronda de Dalt
The works on the Rovira tunnel are also being extended, which will always maintain the upward direction.

BarcelonaThat Barcelona is full of ongoing construction projects has been evident for months. But, as every year, with the arrival of summer, the City Council takes the opportunity to accelerate some of them, especially those with a greater impact on mobility. Taking advantage of the reduction in traffic brought about by the start of the school holidays, the council presented this Thursday the catalogue of specific works for the summer of 2025, which includes 38 interventions with a significant impact on public spaces. Among them are those related to the work on lines L9 of the metro and L8 of the Catalan regional railways (FGC), and those that will affect key mobility routes such as Muntaner, Balmes, the Ronda de Dalt, and the Meridiana, which will experience closures and loss of traffic lanes in the coming months. All of this is in addition to the many projects already underway that will remain unchanged during the summer, such as the closures in Urgell and the works in Plaça Espanya resulting from the extension of line L8.
Muntaner Street, closed for more than a year
One of the main traffic impacts of the roadworks being carried out in the city will be on Muntaner Street. The closure will be extended by a further section to reach Avenir Street.
To try to offset the potential impact on traffic on one of the main roads connecting Via Augusta with the city center, starting July 27, Amigó Street will be rerouted between Via Augusta and Travessera de Agosto. Via Augusta's capacity will be expanded to Balmes, which will be configured with two lanes in each direction.
Another project that could have a significant impact on traffic is the continued closure of the Ronda de Dalt between Avenida de Vallcarca and the Vall d'Hebron High School. Last summer, the closure of the left lane in both directions was necessary, but this time it will be the right lane in both directions, which will be closed between July 14 and September 4. This restriction will be accompanied by nighttime closures.
Two of the main arteries of the intercity network will also lose traffic lanes: Calle Balmes and Avenida Meridiana. In the case of the former, the work is entering its third phase, and starting August 8, the Besòs strip will be occupied, while one downhill lane and two uphill lanes will be maintained in the section between Ronda General Mitre and Plaza Molina. One lane per lane will also be closed on the General Mitre ring road at the intersection with Balmes between late July and early August. The Meridiana will have only two lanes in each direction between Felipe II and Fabra i Puig between July 27 and September 8.
The Manuel Girona station on L9
The impacts resulting from the construction of the future Manuel Girona station on metro lines L9 and L10 will be expected. Doctor Ferran Street, which will result in the closure of mountain traffic. Later—from August 4th until the completion of the work—the street's roadway and the sidewalk on the Llobregat side will be completely covered.
Work on the Rovira Tunnel will also continue during the summer. It has had to be rescheduled due to the rock present in the subsoil and will take two months longer than expected. Thus, instead of being completed in December, it will not initially be until February that traffic can be reopened in both directions. Until then, traffic will continue to be maintained in the mountain direction, although until October it will be carried out using the usual tunnel. From then on, until the end of the works, the ascent will be carried out using the lane normally used for descending, which is now closed due to the works. However, traffic will continue to be closed in both directions at night, as is currently the case.
The works that are being completed
Despite the multitude of major projects underway, summer will also bring a respite to some city residents. The inauguration of the new park will take place on June 29th. the new Via Laietana After three years of construction, the premiere of the film is also expected during the month of July. green walk on the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanas in the section that passes over the Glòries tunnel, between the square itself and Bilbao Street. In August, the works that have been underway since the beginning of the year to redevelop and pacify the Llobregat district of Jardinets de Gràcia will also be completed. Furthermore, the Generalitat (Catalan Government) expects to have completed the work on the B-23 bus lane, which will provide access to the Catalan capital via the Diagonal highway, by July.
