TarragonaThe environment of the three boys who drowned on Friday on Tarragona beach remains totally stunned. The solemn minute of silence observed on Sunday in Plaça de la Font, with the presence of the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and the mayor of the city, Rubén Viñuales, marked the end of a tragic weekend, but Monday, amidst preparations for the wake and the incessant calls from the media, was no easier. "We are completely overwhelmed and devastated," explains the president of the La Floresta football club, Pablo Pedro, to ARA. One of the victims, Maikel, only twelve years old, was a player for this humble but proud Tarragona football club, where another of the victims, Elías, who had just signed for another team, had also trained. The third boy who drowned, Andine, was a friend to both. On that Friday, there were three other boys, who managed to save their lives and call for help.

From the club they highlight that Maikel was a "much loved" boy and that he was "a star with the ball". He was the captain of the team and played as a centre forward, but he was also good when they put him in as an attacking midfielder. Pablo Pedro explains that some big teams had already noticed the young talent and that the most certain thing was that next year Villarreal would have signed him, a club with whom La Floresta has a collaboration agreement. This would have meant a giant step for the boy, since the new club would have taken charge of his studies and, in addition, they would have started paying "a few cents" to the family. Maikel did not know how to swim and it is difficult to understand how he ended up drowning. "Not long ago we went to the beach and he didn't let the water go past his knees. He was very afraid of the sea," explains Pedro.

The friends and relatives of the victims lament that "the media are saying that the boys were playing on the rocks and it is not true" and assure that it was the current that took the boys there. They also criticize that the beach lifeguards did not pay attention to the boys when they warned them of what was happening, but sources from the Mossos d'Esquadra assure that there are no indications of any malpractice by the lifeguards.
