BarcelonaA man died this Wednesday afternoon after being shot in the street in Lleida. According to sources familiar with the case, the victim was an off-duty Mossos d'Esquadra officer. The alleged perpetrator was his father-in-law, a 78-year-old man who surrendered to the police at the scene and was arrested. The same sources emphasize that it was a family dispute unrelated to the victim's work as a police officer. The incident occurred on Doctora Castells Street, in the Cappont neighborhood.

The Mossos d'Esquadra received the alert around 3:20 p.m. and several police patrols and emergency services were dispatched to the scene, at 17 Doctora Castells Street. In fact, according to sources consulted by ARA, it was the perpetrator himself who, after firing five fatal shots at his father-in-law, called the police. He then left the gun in the car, covered the body with a sheet, and waited. When the Mossos d'Esquadra officers arrived, he gave them his cell phone and surrendered. Moments later, he was arrested, as can be seen in a video recorded by neighbors.

The man turned himself in to the police after the crime.

Initial hypotheses point to a family dispute over visiting the women. The man is believed to have mental health issues. In fact, just before the crime, the man reportedly left a psychiatric hospital to go to the neighborhood where his daughter lived with her husband. Once he saw her on the street, he opened fire. Sources close to the case indicate that the man's condition prevented him from seeing his women regularly, and this, according to initial hypotheses, was one of the motives for the crime. The Mossos d'Esquadra officer was stationed at the Mollerussa police station.
