A man fatally stabs his ex-partner in the street in Figueres

FiguerasThe Mossos d'Esquadra and the Guardia Urbana have arrested a 48-year-old man for stabbing his ex-partner to death in the middle of the street in Figueres. The events occurred around half past two in the afternoon in Plaça Tarradellas, when the man attacked the victim with a bladed weapon. Emergency services received the alert and rushed to the scene, but SEM personnel could do nothing to save the life of the 33-year-old woman, who was seriously injured. The urgently dispatched patrols arrested the aggressor a few meters from the woman's body.

The arrested man attacked the woman with a large knife in broad daylight, in a fairly central tree-lined square, under the gaze of several neighbors who were around the street. According to testimonies present at the scene, after leaving her mortally wounded on the ground, the aggressor did not attempt to help her, nor did he flee running. He calmly walked to the square's fountain to wash his bloody hands and arms. Then, security forces arrived and handcuffed him on the ground in the same sand of the square.

According to initial reports, the arrested man had a restraining order against the woman and had already been arrested last week for violating it. The Mossos have taken charge of the investigation of the case and are investigating it as a presumed femicide. It would be the third in Catalonia this year. The Figueres City Council will convene a minute of silence on Wednesday to condemn the events.
