First protests for the educational strike in the Valencian Country
The teaching staff demands salary improvements, staffing and infrastructure improvements, reductions in ratios and bureaucracy, and promotion of teaching in Valencian
ValenciaUp to 29.06% of teachers in the Alicante region, 30.46% in Castelló, and 33.76% in Valencia. This is the follow-up of the educational strike in the Valencian Community according to the data released this morning by the Generalitat and while awaiting the dissemination of the unions' data.
The day of protest began with gatherings at the doors of the Education department's facilities in Alicante, Castelló de la Plana, and Valencia, as well as in the main squares of cities such as Elx, Alcoi, Oriola, Gandia, Xàtiva, Sagunt, Vila-real, Sogorb, and Benicarló, among others. As expected, the largest one took place in Valencia, where at 10 a.m. hundreds of teachers protested to demand salary, staff, and infrastructure improvements, reductions in student-teacher ratios, a reduction in bureaucracy, and the promotion of education in Valencian. However, the most massive mobilization is expected at 12 p.m. in the three Valencian capitals, with three major demonstrations.
This Tuesday's is the second day of strike in the last four months – the previous one occurred in December – in the Valencian Community. Furthermore, it might not be the last, given that the unions are planning an indefinite strike starting in May if the Generalitat does not address their demands. An agreement that is not expected to be easy, although the Education department has highlighted its "willingness to open a stage of constructive dialogue and to approach the negotiation from a position of concessions from both sides." To see if the negotiations reach a good port, we will have to wait until April 16, when the representatives of the Generalitat and the unions have scheduled another meeting to negotiate.
