The Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) are investigating the discovery of a body at a waste treatment plant in the Zona Franca industrial park. The body was discovered Tuesday afternoon by a worker at the Ecoparc facility, located near the port of Barcelona, according to ARA. The body was found on one of the waste treatment walkways and had several marks on it. A preliminary autopsy has determined that these injuries could be consistent with the machinery at the plant. This means that, for the time being, the case is not being investigated as a homicide, since no signs of foul play have been found. Police are currently trying to identify the victim and, if it was an accident, how it occurred.
The body was found on a sorting conveyor belt, which separates products by type for further processing. At this time, it has been ruled out that the body was that of a plant worker.
This is not the first time a body has been found at a recycling plant. A year ago, one was also located at the Sant Adrià de Besòs Ecopark. In these cases, identifying the victim is key to tracing the route that led them there. One hypothesis that cannot be ruled out is that the body originated in a regular trash container.
