Mom is going to Antarctica, by Anna Cabré Albós and Mariona Tolosa Sisteré (Zahorí Books, 2020).

'Mom goes to Antarctica'

Anna Cabré, a climate physicist and oceanographer, was the only Catalan to travel to Antarctica with the Homeward Bound 2019 project. That expedition brought together 100 women scientists from around the world to study the effects of global warming at the South Pole and, at the same time, to advocate for greater female leadership in political decision-making regarding the climate emergency. Under the premise of "What does mom do when she's not home?", this family book combines Anna's testimony with Mariona Tolosa's illustrations to tell us what her trip to one of the most remote places on the planet was like. A tender adventure with an environmentalist background that, full of icebergs, whales, and seals, encourages us to unite to stop the melting of her world.Pioneers

On July 1, 1935, was born Josefina 'Pepita' Castellví

Josefina Castellví

Catalan oceanographer and biologist, she specialized in marine bacteria and microalgae. She fought against gender barriers to become the first woman in Spain to participate in an international expedition to Antarctica, in 1984. She was also part of the team responsible for the installation of the Joan Carles I Antarctic Base, the first in the State, on Livingston Island. She took over its direction in 1989, thus becoming the first woman in history to direct an Antarctic base. Pepita, as she liked to be called, died in February 2026.At a glance

The plastic we eat (and throw into the sea)

Food and drink packaging is the main source of global plastic pollution. The rise of home delivery and takeaway food has caused a surge in the amount of single-use packaging, with each European generating around 36 kg per year.

'The Old Sailor's Odyssey'

The monk seal is one of the most endangered species on our planet. Also called the Mediterranean monk seal, it used to live throughout the Mediterranean basin. But due to human action, and since the 20th century, its population has been dwindling until only a few isolated colonies remained. The refuge of one of these last colonies is found on the Atlantic coasts of Cape Blanc, in Mauritania. It is there, atop some cliffs and against the harshness of the weather, where a group of scientists sets up a small camp to be able to study it. This documentary, which takes the form of a road movie, will follow the efforts of this team of scientists who, by documenting the secret life of the monk seal, are fighting to save one of the most special and emblematic species of our Mediterranean Sea from extinction.Guided tours at CRAM (El Prat de Llobregat)

Every weekend, by prior reservation

The Centre for the Recovery of Marine Animals opens its doors to its facilities. Guided by its educators, we will be able to discover the different areas of the center and visit the animals that are being recovered there before they are reintroduced into their natural environment. Aimed at both adults and children, these visits aim to raise awareness of the fragility of marine biodiversity, foster individual and collective commitment to its conservation, and publicize local actions to preserve it. All this with hope and optimism.

Exhibition 'Invisible Animals', at the Barcelona Museum of Natural Sciences (Barcelona)

Until January 10, 2027, with ticket purchase

A journey through the imaginary that invisible beings have generated within us. Beings from the past, extinct or legendary... but also those who are still alive and we do not see, due to their scarcity or elusiveness. At this historical moment when the biodiversity of our planet is in danger, the exhibition aims to reclaim the importance of all animals, whether visible or not. Always from a scientific perspective, and with Viggo Mortensen as host, this is an innovative and reflective proposal to talk about the importance of preserving our ecosystems.
