Full moon

Everything is ready for the biggest supermoon of the year: when and how can you see it?

We explain how to see this astronomical phenomenon that will begin in November

This first supermoon is known as the Snow Moon, as it coincides with snowfall in the Northern Hemisphere. The photo was taken in Athens, Greece.

We'll soon be able to enjoy another supermoon: this Wednesday, November 5th, brings what's known as the Beaver Supermoon. It will be the second supermoon of the year, but the largest of the three in 2025. Specifically, it will appear up to 7.7% larger and 16% brighter than usual, according to Meteolluna. A supermoon is a phenomenon that occurs when a full moon coincides with the point in its orbit where the satellite is closest to Earth. This Wednesday, the satellite will be about 356,967 km away, making it the closest point to Earth this year. However, this will happen at 2:19 PM Catalan time, not at night, but we'll explain when it will be best seen.

When and how to see the supermoon?

It won't be until 5:48 PM that we'll be able to see the satellite rise over the horizon. However, the peak will be at 12:30 AM on November 6th: from this time until dawn, we'll be able to see the supermoon in its full splendor. It will be in its full phase and 99.9% illuminated, in the sign of Taurus, shining in the constellation of Aries. We'll be able to see it with the naked eye if the weather cooperates: we're keeping an eye on a change of weather which should arrive on Thursday and could complicate our view of the phenomenon.

If we're not lucky enough to see it this Wednesday, we'll still have another chance: the last super full moon of the year will be on December 5, shortly after midnight.

Why is it called the Beaver Moon? Like many other events related to the satellite, the name comes from Native American cultures, associated with the cycles of hunting and harvesting. Specifically, it could refer to when these rodents built dams before hibernating, or when hunters accelerated their hunts to have a good supply of furs before winter.
