BarcelonaAfter Àngel Ros tried it during his time as mayor of Lleida, the PSC is once again trying to ban the burqa and niqab in the capital of El Segrià at the hands of socialist mayor Fèlix Larrosa. Amidst the rise of the far-right, which has put the ban on the burqa and the fight against Islam on the table in recent years, the government of the Paeria de Lleida presented this Tuesday the proposal for an ordinance on civility and coexistence, which foresees, among other things, prohibiting the use of the full-face veil in public spaces and municipal offices. The previous attempt to veto the burqa clashed with the Supreme Court, which struck down the initiative by considering that a city council could not regulate it.

had stated that it supports the prohibition of the burqaHowever, Larrosa's step does not contradict the PSC, as the party recently had stated that it supports the ban on the burqa, although without sanctioning the women because they consider them "victims". Even ERC has proposed to sanction the use of the burqa without going through the Penal Code. The far-right parties Vox and Alianza Catalana have led this debate, mixing the prohibition of these garments with their Islamophobia, but the full-face veil has penetrated public debate in such a way that various parties have shifted their positions. Junts even went a step further, defending that in schools the Islamic veil must be prohibited –the hijab, which is a scarf that only covers the hair and allows the entire face to be seen–.
