Spain will ask the EU to break with Israel on Tuesday

BarcelonaA few days ago, it was done by letter, also signed by Ireland and Slovenia, and next Tuesday the Spanish government will formally request that the European Union break its association agreement with Israel. This was announced by the president of the executive, Pedro Sánchez, from Andalusia, where he participated in an electoral event alongside the socialist candidate, María Jesús Montero. According to Sánchez, Benjamin Netanyahu's government cannot continue to be a preferred partner of the EU because it "is violating international law" and, therefore, "the principles and values of the EU". It will be at the meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs where the Spanish government's request will be formalized. 

If on Saturday in Barcelona Sánchez's target was Donald Trump, this Sunday from Gibraleón (Huelva) he has pointed to the main international partner of the President of the United States. Spain is one of the states that has most forcefully spoken out against Israel's military actions. In September, in fact, it approved a total arms embargo with the Hebrew state (in 2023 it already prohibited exports) and diplomatic relations are at an all-time low: in March, Sánchez had already withdrawn the ambassador to Israel and left the chargé d'affaires as the highest representative.

The recognition of the Palestinian state; the denunciation of the "genocide" in Gaza; the frontal criticism of "illegal" attacks in Iran or Lebanon; in addition to the latest clash over the approval in the Israeli Parliament of the death penalty for people convicted of terrorist attacks, have marked the recent relations between the two states. Now, Sánchez is promoting a campaign for the entire European Union to repudiate the attitude of the Netanyahu government.
