Illa meets with Zelensky in Kyiv

The president of the Generalitat conveys the support of Catalonia to the Ukrainian leader on his trip to Ukraine

BrusselsThe President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has met with the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Kyiv. Government sources report that the socialist leader conveyed the "commitment and solidarity" of Catalonia to the Ukrainian people, and highlighted to him that since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Catalans have been on their side. "This trip is a sign of the will to reaffirm and strengthen this support," the same government sources assure.

Previously, the President of the Generalitat also sent a message of support to the Ukrainian people and championed their fight against the Russian invasion. "[The future of Ukraine] is the future of Europe and Catalonia," the socialist leader said from Kyiv. "Ukrainians are not only defending themselves, with their resilience, with their titanic effort, but they are defending all of us Europeans," added the President of the Generalitat, who announced that he will sign "cooperation agreements" with three regions: Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Lviv.

Illa will also meet with the Federation of Employers of Ukraine and with the European Union ambassador to the Ukrainian country, and will meet with Ukrainian political and social activists. In addition, the President of the Generalitat will hold an event with Sister Lucía Caram to recognize her work in helping the Ukrainian people. The President of the Generalitat is making the trip with the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, and the Minister for the European Union and Foreign Action, Jaume Duch.
