The series with Catalan seal 'I always sometimes', award for best screenplay at Canneseries
Marta Bassols and Marta Loza are the creators of this fiction set in Barcelona and produced by Movistar Plus+ and the Javis
BarcelonaThe production Yo siempre a veces, set in Barcelona and co-created by Marta Bassols and Marta Loza, has won the award for best screenplay at the Canneseries festival, which concluded this Tuesday. The dramedy, which can now be seen on Movistar Plus+, follows the life of Laura, a girl from Santa Coloma who gets pregnant shortly after starting an intense relationship with Rubén, the owner of a bar in the Raval with whom she goes to raves. When they separate, Laura is faced with the reality that she must assume the upbringing of her son almost alone. The series shows the difficulties of being a mother in a precarious environment.During its run at Canneseries, Marta Bassols explained that the series "has a lot" of her own motherhood and that there are some parallels between her and the protagonist. "I am also from Santa Coloma, I also lived in Berlin, I got pregnant without thinking much about it and I stayed in Barcelona –like the character of Laura–. I also broke up and was left with a very small child, smaller than the one in the series, and I filmed from house to house," explains Bassols in statements collected by the Efe agency. Yo siempre a veces is Bassols' first production as a creator, who as an actress has appeared in other fiction such as Això no és Suècia and La Mesías and in films such as El futuro and Mamántula. The other creator of the series, Marta Loza from Asturias, has been part of the art department of films such as Dolor y gloria, by Pedro Almodóvar, or the music video Motomami by Rosalía. The Canneseries award for best screenplay was shared by Bassols and Loza with a third screenwriter, Almudena Monzú. The direction of the series also has a feminine touch: in addition to Loza, Claudia Costafreda and Ginesta Guindal have been behind the camera.
Another of the series' debutantes is its main actress, Ana Boga, previously unknown, who in Yo siempre a veces carries almost the entire dramatic weight of the story. The one responsible for bringing Rubén, the protagonist's ex-partner, to life is David Menéndez, a musician and actor from Barcelona who has participated in series such as Antidisturbios.
The precedent of Leticia Dolera and Aina Clotet
I always sometimes, which passed through the D'A festival, is a production by Movistar Plus+ and Suma Content, the production company of Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis. Among the contenders for the grand prize at Canneseries there were seven more productions from around the world, including Se tiene que morir mucha gente, another Movistar Plus+ series. The comedy, starring Anna Castillo, Macarena García, and Laura Weissmahr, is the debut as a television creator by comedian Victoria Martín, known for the podcast Estirando el chicle.
This is not the first time that Canneseries, one of the most important European series festivals, has recognized Catalan talent. In 2019 Leticia Dolera won two awards with her first series, Déjate llevar, which was later retitled as Vida perfecta, and which was also a Movistar Plus+ production. Vida perfecta also won the special acting award, which was received by Dolera herself, along with her co-stars, Aixa Villagrán and Celia Freijeiro. In 2024 Aina Clotet won the award for best performance for Això no és Suècia (RTVE), a series created by herself and also focused on motherhood, although from a quite different perspective than that of I always sometimes.
