Maduro publishes his first images from the New York prison

BarcelonaThe president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, who was captured in a US military operation in January, has published the first images from a New York prison, where he awaits trial, on his social networks, and has assured that he is "firm". Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are imprisoned in a Brooklyn jail accused of drug trafficking and possession of firearms, charges that both deny.

"I send these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, to the children, and to all the noble people who love us," he wrote on his Telegram channel. "I want you to know that we are firm, with our hearts full of your love," he added.

In the two published photographs, Maduro wears a gray tracksuit while making the victory sign with his hands. He looks thinner than at the time of his capture, but, apparently, in good health. The photographs, although they came to light this morning, date, according to the camera's record, from June 25, one day after the deadly double earthquake that left more than 6,500 dead and caused damage in northern Venezuela. "We will continue strong, serene and confident: God is with us. God will provide. Venezuela will be reborn," he concludes.

The message was published two days after his successor, interim president Delcy Rodríguez, announced an "historic" agreement that allows the United States to take control of Venezuelan oil. In prison, Maduro has no access to newspapers or the internet, but he is authorized to speak by phone with his family and lawyers for approximately 300 minutes per month, with a maximum of 15 minutes per call, according to sources close to the case. His son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, assures that he is in good shape and dedicates his time to studying the Bible.

The trial in the United States against Maduro and his wife will begin on June 1, 2027, as announced at the end of July by a federal court in New York.
