6 restaurants in the Terres de l'Ebre that will make you touch gastronomic heaven
Beyond a natural paradise, the Delta is a great gastronomic destination with proposals as unique and singular as the territory that hosts it
The Terres de l'Ebre are popularly known for their natural richness. Marked by the Ebre River and with a delta that is unique in the world, many describe this area of Catalonia as a national treasure. However, it is also a territory with a unique gastronomic offer, both in terms of dishes and the locations of the restaurants themselves. There are places located in the middle of the sea, businesses with Michelin stars, wineries with more than two decades of history, or even an old mill that cultivates the products that will be used later in the kitchen.
The six restaurants in this guide not only offer an immense diversity of culinary proposals, but also the hundreds of hands that make it possible and that fight day by day to keep the projects alive.
Musclarium, Badia dels Alfacs
In summer, the bay of Alfacs in La Ràpita is a hive of boats. In the heart of this large body of water, however, lies Musclarium, a restaurant where you can eat oysters and mussels from kilometer zero and freshly caught from the sea. You can only get there by boat, but don't worry: booking an experience at this restaurant includes sea taxis to get there, and the range of activities is very diverse and complete with quite affordable prices of around 36 euros per person.
Maury’s Brasa, la Ràpita
On the N-340 road – exactly at kilometer 1.071 – there is a grilled meat terrace that every weekend is packed. Behind the grill is Maury Lucero, grandson of Basque and Aragonese immigrants who left for Argentina after the Civil War, and who has now turned his roadside establishment into a gastronomic destination for meat lovers. The price to pay per person is approximately 60 euros per person, and anyone who visits can taste offerings such as classic Argentine grills.
Balfegó Tuna Tour, l'Ametlla de Mar
Can anyone imagine going to a restaurant and ending up five kilometers out at sea? Well, that's precisely the case with the Tuna Tour offered by Balfegó, a family business formed by the fifth generation of fishermen from L'Ametlla de Mar. From this very municipality, a catamaran departs to introduce red tuna to anyone who wants to book the experience. During the activity, you can swim in large pools with the fish or even go snorkeling. The experience culminates with the tasting of the animal, but it includes a part of disclosure about the fish's characteristics. Regarding prices, options are offered starting from 45 euros in August, during high season. However, the youngest under four do not pay.
The Old Mill, Ulldecona
In Ulldecona there is a Michelin-starred restaurant called l'Antic Molí. But, in this case, the award is the least noteworthy. The proposal by the chef and owner, Vicent Guimerà, consists of a circular economy project that positively impacts the territory, and which is incorporated into high gastronomy accessible to everyone. In this case, the food that will be served is grown in the garden, and the compost from organic waste is also reused by the restaurant. Two tasting menus stand out with products such as lamb's lettuce, celery and beetroot, or eel, monkfish, chard and clams. Visiting l'Antic Molí is not just a gastronomic experience that will satisfy the palate of each client, but a collective project where everyone is welcome.
Villa Retiro, Xerta
In summer, it is possible for some to prefer to escape the hustle and bustle of the coast. And, in the case of the Hotel Restaurant Villa Retiro, one can retreat to the garden of a modernist house from a whole lineage of 'indians' who, upon returning from the Americas, built it. Besides having privileged spaces, the restaurant also boasts a Michelin star thanks to a cuisine that links the various courses of the meal with places important to the region or to the business's own chef, Fran López.
Citrus del Tancat, Alcanar
El Citrus Tancat is a restaurant with a great gastronomic legacy from the Delta and the Valencian Country. Aitor López, the establishment's chef, is passionate about traditional cuisine and has developed unique proposals such as tuna cured meats. You will find the restaurant in a hotel surrounded by orange trees. Spending the night there is a highly recommended option. In addition, at the entrance to the space, they also have a simple restaurant which is a rice eatery that is very summery.
