BarcelonaElectrification marks the renewal of the vehicle fleet. In Catalonia, more than 10,100 electrified vehicles—plug-in hybrids and pure electrics—have been sold up to May, 60% more than in the same period last year. This growth contrasts with the 17% decrease in gasoline vehicle registrations during the same period (14,700), shared with diesel registrations (2,300), which was 23%, according to data from the employers' association Anfac.

In May alone, sales of pure electric cars more than doubled compared to the previous year, going from almost 1,300 in 2024 to more than 2,700 this year. As for plug-in hybrids, they have increased by 57% year-on-year, to almost 4,700; and pure electric vehicles grew by 62%, reaching more than 5,400. Total registrations in Catalonia during the month of May were around 12,000 passenger cars, 24% more than a year ago. In the first five months of the year, sales were 53,000 passenger cars, 13% more.

Sales of electric vehicles have grown, although Elon Musk's Tesla has been in free fall for months following its participation in Donald Trump's administration. Since the beginning of the year, only 709 Tesla vehicles have been sold in the province of Barcelona, 29% fewer than in the same period in 2024, when the US administration was still a Democrat.

A decline that continues in the other Catalan demarcations during the first five months of the year, despite Musk's recent departure from the political frontline. In total, sales totaled just over 900 Tesla vehicles across Catalonia this year. In the rest of Spain, Tesla's sales fell 19% year-on-year between January and May, with around 5,600 vehicles sold.

Chinese car sales are up

Tesla's figures are far from those of other electric car brands, such as Chinese manufacturers. BYD's sales in Barcelona grew by more than 421% between January and May compared to last year. Others, such as Omoda, the company responsible for the reindustrialization of the former Nissan plant in Zona Franca, grew by 122%, and MG by 37%.

This trend toward electrification also continues in the Spanish market. Almost 22,000 new units of electrified passenger cars were sold throughout Spain this May, 138% more than in the same month last year. Furthermore, this type of model achieved a market share of 19%. This record represents the highest ever monthly sales of this vehicle model.
