"We want to indoctrinate people in democracy and its values. What's dangerous is indoctrinating them in totalitarianism. We want to encourage calm and thoughtful reflection on what it means to live in a democracy and what it meant to live under a dictatorship, especially among those who didn't experience the four decades of Franco's dictatorship and the lack of freedom, and the concept of Democratic Memory. People born after 1975 see it as something distant, but it isn't. We want them to understand and compare all these rights that are now part of our democracy with the lack of freedoms, the repression, the persecution, and the oppression of women and many other groups that this situation promotes," he added.
The program's coordinator, Carmina Gustrán, explained that the activities are designed primarily for young people. For example, they are developing a video game that will help them understand the personal and political attitudes that threaten democracy. "We want to work with our youth, making them participants and protagonists, so they can play an active role in the events organized to celebrate and raise awareness of Spain's democratic memory," Gustrán explained.
