Susan Sarandon arrested at a protest against Netanyahu in New York

BarcelonaThe New York police arrested actresses Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder this Thursday during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his speech at the UN General Assembly, according to the Efe agency. In the photographs shared on social media, Einbinder (known for the HBO series Hacks) can be seen handcuffed by the city police, while Sarandon is shown being arrested by several officers.

During the demonstration, the police also arrested Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic candidate for the US House of Representatives, according to The New York Post. "Netanyahu should be in The Hague, not on the streets of New York City, and certainly not addressing the United Nations General Assembly. The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against him for war crimes and crimes against humanity," said Avila Chevalier during the protest.

The newspaper highlights that, while being detained and taken to a New York police bus, Avila Chevalier shouted: "Free Palestine!" Also present at the demonstration were actress Cynthia Nixon, known for playing the character of Miranda in Sex and the City, and politician Brad Lander. The protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace and took place one week after the Trump administration proposed the sale of one-ton bombs to Israel for a value of 2.8 billion dollars.

Despite the various demonstrations, Netanyahu turned his UN speech into a warmongering rally. The Israeli prime minister lashed out at Philippe Lazzarini, whom he described as an "antisemite" who "praises criminals convicted for supporting Hamas".
