Street violence spreads: tonight it has been Bilbao's turn

Probably, the majority of the violent ones have been born in Catalonia. Someday they must stop being immigrants if what they want is a country gathered around some shared values and a civic culture

Tonight it was the turn of the Basque Country, in Bilbao, chaos in the streets. Burning of dumpsters, burning of cars and motorcycles, running, 19 arrested by the Ertzaintza, of which 11 are minors, at the end of an event called by Vito Quiles. The Basque police, by the way, were surprised because it took them an hour to start intervening.

The pattern of Paris, of Limoges, of Milan, of Barcelona, therefore, has been repeated in Bilbao. While the police investigate who is behind it, and experts demand that the social networks that channel these messages be held responsible for the content they publish and which can incite violence, we are starting to learn something more about the personality of those arrested.

Do not miss this page signed by Cesc Maideu, who spent the day yesterday at the City of Justice: Three minors have been admitted to a closed-regime center; tearful parents, repentant youths who are now beginning to be aware of the gravity of what they did, and, very interestingly, fifteen-year-olds who had seen images of Paris and wanted to demonstrate saw the smashing, took the opportunity to steal three or four objects, put them in their bag, and were arrested. A youthful recklessness resulting in violence. Each hour that passes it becomes clearer what we said yesterday: street violence punishes those in government, who in Spain, Catalonia, and Barcelona are socialists. And another thing: saying that they were all immigrants is not true, apart from the fact that probably the majority of the violent ones were born in Catalonia. Someday they must stop being immigrants if what they want is a country united around shared values and a civic culture. Now part of the Mossos' efforts are focused on preventing us from returning to it on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the PP and Vox have reached an agreement in 23 provinces to defeat Sánchez. This means, for example, that in Tarragona and Girona there will be no PP ballots for the Senate, and in Castellón, Valencia, and Mallorca there will be no Vox ballots for the Senate, based on the fact that in these provinces the parties that are not running now had never obtained representation in previous elections. Why are they doing this? To try to obtain a supermajority of three-fifths that allows them to decide between the PP and Vox the appointments of magistrates of the TC and the CGPJ, without the need to reach any agreement with the PSOE. In other words, the political control of the judiciary with the collaboration of judges with a right-wing or far-right bias. I often add the phrase “pardon the redundancy,” and today it is clear why I say it and why, unfortunately, it is much more than a joke: the PP embraces the enemies of the Catalan language and culture and their Government. It does not surprise us, but it is definitely revealing.

And before finishing, we congratulate from here Ignasi Aragay, the deputy director of ARA, who yesterday received the Montserrat Roig award for his career at a ceremony in the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona City Council. He was defined as a “creative, discreet, very well-read and hardworking person, with a great social disposition. He is a good professional and a good person, as well as a teacher and mentor to journalists from one of the country's reference newspapers”. I confirm it. And he said: “The profession has a lot of future and is more necessary than ever. At the newspaper there are many young people who are fantastic, very good, dedicated. The situation is extremely difficult for journalism, but I have a lot of hope and I believe we will move forward”. I wish for it.

Good morning.
