The heatwave intensifies: new heat records could be broken

The temperature has already clearly risen this Wednesday, exceeding 35 °C in many inland areas and setting new heat records for a September month, as in the case of the Fabra Observatory, where the 33.6 °C measured is the highest value since 1914. All this is the prelude to an exceptional heatwave that will cause the temperature to be well above the climatic average, with forecasts of new temperature records in the coming days.

Thursday: the heat intensifies

The temperature will continue to rise in the coming days and will reach 34°C or 36°C in more inland areas, with unusual heat at the beginning of September. In fact, in some places in Ponent and the interior of the Ebro valley, temperatures could already reach or exceed 38°C. The minimum temperature will also rise and tropical nights will regain ground on the coast, the pre-coast and in Ponent, with some torrid readings on the central coast. As for the sky, the sun will once again dominate, with practically no change compared to Wednesday, and there will be some low morning clouds on the southern coast and in the Valencian Country.

Friday: sweltering weather

The mercury will reach episode highs in some places by Friday, when maximum temperatures will reach 37°C or 38°C in more inland areas, with some local records of 39°C or 40°C. These are unusual values and, in many cases, record-breaking, which would not even be usual at the end of July or beginning of August. The weather will remain calm, the sun will be the protagonist, and there will be no precipitation on the horizon.

The warm peak will arrive between Friday and Sunday

The mass of warm air affecting the Iberian Peninsula will reach its peak between Friday and the weekend, with an exceptional temperature at 850 hPa (around 1,500 meters). It would not be strange to achieve some record at this level with the radiosonde data launched from the University Zone of the Catalan capital. On Friday, the temperature will reach 37 °C or 38 °C in the central pre-coastal area and in regions like Bages, while it could reach or exceed 40 °C in Ponent and the Ebro valley, a situation that will also be repeated on both Saturday and Sunday.
