Strong winds until tomorrow morning, but the anticyclone is already knocking on the door.
In the coming days we will experience the longest period of calm since the beginning of the year
BarcelonaThe episode of strong winds in the last few hours, driven by the storm Peter The storm is making its presence felt in many regions and has already produced gusts of over 100 km/h in the far reaches of the country. Notable gusts include 122 km/h in El Perelló (Baix Ebre), 121 km/h in La Riba (Alt Camp), 116 km/h in Portbou (Baix Empordà), 107 km/h in Mas de Barberans (Montsià), 106 km/h in Espot (at an altitude of 2,519 m, Pallars Sobars), Pallars Sobirà Jussà), and 100 km/h in Miami Playa (Baix Camp). In the rest of central and southern Spain, and in the western part of the country, many gusts have been recorded between 60 and 80 km/h, and some incidents have occurred, mostly in Barcelona and its metropolitan area.
Strong westerly and northwesterly winds will persist until midday Friday in the southern half of the country – especially between Camp de Tarragona, the Ebro Delta, and inland Castellón – as well as in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees peaks and much of the Costa Brava and Northern Catalonia. The situation will improve significantly tomorrow afternoon, and by the weekend the wind will completely die down with the arrival of the high-pressure system. We can expect days of sunshine and absolute calm, the likes of which we haven't had for weeks, and we will begin the longest period of calm weather so far in 2026, which will bring an end to the string of storms of the last two months.
Night, night, and early morning: strong winds
The mistral and westerly winds will continue to blow strongly in many areas over the next few hours. Gusts will be strong or very strong between the pre-coastal and southern coast of Barcelona, all the districts of Tarragona, the Alt Empordà, and the peaks of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, where blizzard conditions are expected. In these areas, winds could again exceed 100 km/h. There will also be gusty winds in other areas, such as Ponent, the Barcelona area, and some valleys in the Pyrenees, but with less intense gusts. Meteocat has several districts under a strong wind alert until Friday at noon. Snowfall will continue on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees, with the snow level around 1,000 m.
Friday: the weather will improve
The wind will still blow strongly on Friday in the far reaches of the country until midday, but will clearly subside in the afternoon, with only strong gusts remaining in northern Empordà and on the Pyrenean peaks. Light showers are still expected on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees during the morning, with snow down to 1,000 meters, but the precipitation will clear in the afternoon, although the sky will remain overcast. Elsewhere, the sky will be hazy with high, thin clouds, and it may become even cloudier in the northern half during the afternoon, without any major consequences. It will be slightly colder in the early morning, while maximum temperatures will rise slightly, with many readings between 13 and 18 °C.
A radiant weekend to make the most of
After the storm PeterThe anticyclone will finally take hold starting this weekend. We can expect sunny and calm days to enjoy, with no wind anywhere and morning fog. There will also be a temperature contrast between the cold nights and the mild middays, as maximum temperatures will rise and it will feel almost like spring. Thermometers will soar in mountainous areas and there will be a marked temperature inversion, with colder mornings at lower elevations than at higher elevations. In fact, there will be clearly positive temperatures in the high mountains, which will cause the large amount of snow in the Pyrenees to melt. Perfect days are coming for the ski slopes, but be very careful if you're skiing independently, as the risk of avalanches may increase due to the rising temperatures.
