Showers are returning to some areas this weekend
The anticyclone will weaken, and more significant changes may occur next week.
BarcelonaAfter a week marked by sunshine, fog, and mild afternoons—even some record-breaking February temperatures—this weekend, marking the start of the new month, the high-pressure system will weaken, and instability will increase. A weakened front will cross the region on Saturday, bringing showers back to some areas, though not everywhere. Temperatures will drop, and Sunday will be overcast. All of this will be a prelude to the most significant changes coming next week. A pocket of cold air will settle between the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, leading to increased atmospheric pressure and instability. Depending on its final position, we could even see some widespread rain by midweek.
Saturday: Showers in some places
The passage of a weakened front will bring increased cloud cover throughout the last day of February. The heaviest cloud cover will be concentrated in the Pyrenees and the northeast of the country, where some light and scattered showers are expected. Some showers or drizzle are also possible in the Pre-Pyrenees, Central Catalonia, and the western and Ebro regions. Precipitation will occur mainly from the afternoon onwards; the morning will be calmer. A little rain is expected, and a few drops are possible in the rest of the country, including the Valencian Community. Morning fog will be common. The rain will be accompanied by mud, as there will be some Saharan dust in the air. The snow level will drop from the initial 1,900 meters to 1,600 meters. Daytime temperatures will also fall, with a marked decrease in the interior and the Pyrenees. The weather will be cooler – or cold in mountainous areas – with a moderate Tramuntana wind arriving on the Costa Brava, which will affect sea conditions. In contrast, the temperature change will not be noticeable along the coast, as temperatures have recently been kept in check by the humidity and the breeze from the still-cold sea. Many highs will range between 15 and 20 °C, noticeably lower in mountainous areas. Conversely, lows will rise compared to previous days, with a more moderate chill in the early morning.
Sunday: time doesn't cleanse
March will begin on Sunday with lingering light showers in the interior of the Girona region, north of Barcelona, and in the Pre-Pyrenees, especially during the morning. Again, these will be scattered and insignificant showers, and the sky will be variable with intervals of cloud cover. Minor variations in a first day of meteorological spring that is quite pleasant across most of the region, with morning fog and temperatures similar to or higher than usual.
Busy weather next week
Next week's weather will be influenced by the arrival of a pocket of cold air settling between the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. Its movements and final position will be key in determining the degree of instability it brings to our region. With current weather maps, the arrival of significantly more suspended African dust is guaranteed. This will result in rain accompanied by a considerable amount of mud. New showers are expected on Tuesday, and on Thursday we could see a general risk of rain, with snow only at the higher elevations of the Pyrenees. There are still a few days to go, and we will need to provide more specific forecasts. All of this will occur with temperatures remaining relatively stable.
