More rain and snow today and in the coming days, with a full winter feel.
Tuesday will still be busy, and Wednesday will bring a break, but the rain will return during the holidays.
BarcelonaThe rain and snow continue unabated, and precipitation has resumed in the northeast of the country this morning. Overall, the rain is light, although some accumulations on the Costa Brava have again exceeded 10 liters per square meter. Snowfall has returned to the eastern Pyrenees, but the snow level is low enough, between 800 and 1,000 meters, which is causing snowfall in other areas as well, such as Montseny, the Transversal mountain range, and the peaks of Montserrat and Sant Llorenç del Munt. Another unsettled day is expected, with these light and scattered showers spreading to more regions and more snow in the Pyrenees, creating a truly wintry feel.
All this comes after the rain and heavy snowfall in the Pyrenees that fell between Sunday night and Monday, with accumulations of more than 40 centimeters at higher elevations and snow also outside the Pyrenees mountain range (you will find more data and images at the end of this report). There will be a break on Wednesday, but between Christmas Day and Boxing Day (Sant Esteve) a sudden increase in rainfall could begin, bringing widespread rain and another significant snowfall to the Pyrenees.
Tuesday: Unsettled weather
Since early this morning, a band of precipitation has moved into the Girona region, spreading towards Barcelona. It is generally light and scattered, but throughout the day it may reach more areas, such as the coast, the rest of Central Catalonia, and the interior of Tarragona. The snow level will be around 800 to 1,000 meters in the morning, but will rise as the day progresses, settling between 1,200 and 1,400 meters. More snow is expected in the eastern Pyrenees, where accumulations will continue. Temperatures will drop slightly more overall, and it will be cold throughout the day. Winter conditions are expected, with most highs between 8 and 13°C, noticeably lower in mountainous areas. North winds will blow at both ends of the region.
Awaiting a possible lifting
Wednesday will be a calmer day with little precipitation in the Balearic Islands. But on Christmas Day, rain will return, with the snow level plummeting to 500 meters below the average in the west of the country and around 1,000 or 1,200 meters in the rest. This will be the prelude to a Boxing Day (Sant Esteve) when the weather maps indicate we could see a rise in the snow, with widespread and heavy rain and another significant snowfall in the Pyrenees above 1,500 meters, especially on the southern slopes.
This situation is still uncertain and will need to be clarified as we move on. Temperatures will fluctuate, but always with a wintry feel and below-average values for this time of year. The year could end even colder.
Rain and snowfall summary in the Pyrenees
The rain front that crossed us between Sunday night and Monday left between 5 and 15 liters per square meter in several areas, but between 20 and 50 liters per square meter in the Girona and northern Barcelona regions. The snowfall of the last few hours has been widespread and significant throughout the Pyrenees, the heaviest of the season so far in many areas, especially in the eastern Pyrenees. The snow level dropped to 1,000 or 800 meters depending on the area and time of day, but locally fell even lower. Snow has also been seen in other mountain areas of the country, such as Prades, on the peaks of Montserrat and the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Natural Park, in the Transversal Range, in Montseny, and at the highest elevations of Central Catalonia. Many Pyrenean valleys have been blanketed in white, creating picturesque scenes and villages transformed into nativity scenes. The heaviest snowfall has been in Ripollès and Cerdanya, with accumulations of over 40 centimeters of fresh snow in areas like Vall de Núria and Vallter. This snowfall is very welcome for the ski sector as we head into the Christmas holidays. Here are some images from this period, showcasing landscapes typical of winter.
