BarcelonaThe weather change we announced a few days ago is here. Starting today, we will be under the effects of the dana Alice In our Mediterranean area, the first to be baptized with its own name. This instability will be exacerbated by the arrival of maritime winds laden with moisture. In Catalonia, there will be irregular and locally strong showers and storms today, especially in coastal, pre-coastal, and central Catalonia areas. However, the storm will particularly affect southern Valencia, where rainfall will be increasingly persistent and abundant, with some downpours. The storm will be particularly severe in Valencia and Alicante on Friday, where the Aemet (Metropolitan Meteorological Agency) has issued a red alert for some regions. Rain will also reach the Balearic Islands, with an orange alert and classes suspended in the Pitiusas. The storm will continue through the weekend, although much of Catalonia will be spared the main event.

Thursday: change in weather

In the last few hours, a cold wave has arrived from the Atlantic, creating a low-pressure system (an isolated low-level depression) in our Mediterranean region. Therefore, today will be a busy day, with a risk of very irregular but locally strong showers and thunderstorms in Catalonia. In the morning and midday, they will begin to affect coastal and pre-coastal areas of Tarragona and Barcelona, and in the afternoon, they will spread to other areas of central Catalonia, the eastern Pyrenees, and the Pre-Pyrenees.

Meteocat has activated a yellow alert for heavy rain in several regions. However, in the rest of the Catalan regions, it will be unlikely to rain, with variable skies.

Pay attention to the Valencian region, as the rains will increase. It has already started to rain during the night and early morning, and during the day the precipitation will be increasingly persistent and abundant, especially between Valencia and Alicante, especially around Cap de la Nau, with some downpours. It will also rain heavily locally in the Pitiusas and eastern Mallorca.

The offshore wind will generally strengthen, although the north wind will dominate in the Empordà. All this with temperatures falling across the board, with mild to somewhat cool conditions in the middle of the day. Many highs will range between 20°C and 25°C.

Waiting for the evolution of the dana

On Friday, the all-coast winds will strengthen, and the maritime situation will be very complicated. This wind will sweep away all precipitation in Catalonia, and apart from the occasional shower on the Ebro, no rain is expected. However, the rain will intensify and be heavy and persistent in the Valencian Community, especially in Valencia and Alicante, as well as in other areas of the southeastern peninsula. This will be the day with the highest accumulation of precipitation and the potential for the most significant downpours. Extreme caution is advised throughout the area.

With some uncertainty, heavy rain may fall on Saturday along the coast and pre-coast of the entire Valencian Country, in the Balearic Islands, and on the Ebro. During the entire episode, local rainfall may exceed 300 l/m² in the south of the Valencian Community. And perhaps sprinkles will also reach the rest of the coast and pre-coast of Catalonia on Sunday. The situation will need to be monitored and updated, as a slight shift in the storm could alter the forecast.
