Heading northeast with a westerly wind, we await cooler weather
Temperatures will drop significantly next week
BarcelonaThe passage of a weak front during the early hours of this morning has brought scattered rainfall across the territory, with generally small amounts ranging between 10 and 15 l/m².2 in the Pyrenees (14 l/m2 in Espot, at 2,400 m), 11 l/m2 in Gisclareny and between 5 and 10 l/m2 on the Costa Brava and on the coast (9 l/m2 in El Prat de Llobregat or 7 l/m2 in Castell d'Aro). The clouds will move away quickly throughout the morning, leaving only slightly overcast skies in the Pyrenees and the northern part of the central coast and the Costa Brava. With the passage of this frontal line, the air will begin to cool, but we will still see normal temperatures for this time of year. This will not be the case next week, when a cold front will bring a significant drop in temperatures, with a full-winter feel between Thursday and Saturday. This would be the first intense cold snap of autumn, especially in the Pyrenees.
Sunday: Cloudy in the Pyrenees and some showers in the northeast
It will remain overcast until the early hours, especially along the central coast and in the northeast. The clouds will dissipate quickly, and the interior will become clear, with a westerly wind bringing fresh air. This wind has been particularly strong, especially at higher elevations. Notable examples include the 98 km/h southwesterly wind recorded at Puig Sesolles in Montseny, the 93 km/h westerly wind at Certascan (2,400 meters), and the 91 km/h wind at Ulldeter.
By mid-morning, the day will be sunny with thin, high-altitude clouds across most areas. However, with the arrival of cold air aloft, cloud cover will return during the afternoon, bringing scattered showers to parts of the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and northeast.
The snow level will descend to 2,000 meters as temperatures drop. Maximum temperatures will generally fall, especially in the northeast, with a more moderate warming effect. The highest values will not exceed 21°C. Minimum temperatures will be recorded in many cases late in the day. Westerly winds will blow, along with a southerly wind (garbí) on the coast, and there will be some gusts of mistral in the Ebro region during the morning.
Winter tasting next week
Next week will begin with cooler temperatures. On Monday, northerly winds will arrive, bringing snow to the northern slopes of the Pyrenees and some afternoon showers in the northeast. The snow level will drop from 2,000 meters to 1,600 meters by the end of the day. All eyes are on the middle and end of the week, as weather maps indicate that temperatures will fall significantly, potentially bringing early winter conditions with below-average values. In fact, by Friday, minimum temperatures in the Pyrenees will be around 8 degrees Celsius lower than current levels, with intense frosts in the high mountains (dropping to -7°C in the valleys). The coldest polar air mass will affect central and northern Europe, bringing midwinter-like temperatures. We'll need to start switching out our wardrobes and getting our warm jackets ready!
