Cool morning and strong thunderstorms in the afternoon

Warning for heavy rain in the northeast and the Pyrenees

16/05/2026

BarcelonaThe passage of a new trough of cold air at altitude will destabilize the weather this Sunday. Showers and storms will increase, with an afternoon expected to be unsettled, especially in the north of the territory and in Central Catalonia. The last polar front has caused a significant cooling, with an atmosphere more typical of March than May. Temperatures have settled between three and eight degrees below the average for the season. Snow has fallen in the Pyrenees below 1,400 m and has left wintery, postcard-like landscapes at medium and high altitudes.

This Saturday we woke up to cold weather. In the Pyrenees and pre-Pyrenees, frosts have been quite widespread, but it seems that, fortunately for the farmers, they have not spread beyond these areas. It was -1 °C in Puigcerdà and -8 °C in La Tosa d'Alp (at 2,500 m). Inland, temperatures have dropped, for example, to 3 °C in Vic or to 1.5 °C in Alfarràs (Segrià) and Prades (Priorat). Even on the coast, the weather has been almost wintery, with a minimum of 8 °C in Viladecans or 7 °C in Cunit.

Sunday: afternoon showers and thunderstorms

Temperatures will rise more tomorrow, both day and night, although they will remain below average. Many highs will move between 17 °C and 23 °C, but will approach 25 °C in parts of Ponent and the southern interior. The morning will be calm, with some clouds lingering on the coast that could leave a few drizzles at dawn and early in the day. In the afternoon, instability will increase and with the passage of a trough of cold air at high altitude, the weather will become complicated. More scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected towards the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, Central Catalonia, the pre-littoral and the Ports.

Showers may fall with strong intensity (more than 20 l/m² in 30 minutes) and leave, locally, hail. In fact, Meteocat already warns of this possibility:

An instability that will decrease in the coming days, as by mid-week anticyclonic calm will once again dominate. The cold air mass we currently have over us will be moving away, and this will cause the heat to be more evident at midday from Wednesday onwards, with many highs between 25°C and 30°C in the pre-coastal areas and inland.
