Barça will play a 'classic' of Spanish football that has not been seen for more than a decade.
The Blaugrana team already knows its opponent in the round of 16 of the Cup
BarcelonaRacing Santander will be Barcelona's opponent in the Copa del Rey round of 16. Despite being a classic rivalry in Spanish football, the Cantabrian side hasn't faced the Blaugrana for 14 years. This is, in fact, how long they've been away from the First Division. The match will be played on January 13, 14, or 15 at Racing Santander's home ground. It won't be an easy tie for Barcelona: the Cantabrian team is currently leading the Second Division.
The draw for the round of 16 has produced a host of historic clashes. Aside from Racing Santander vs. Barcelona, Deportivo La Coruña (Second Division) will face Atlético Madrid at Riazor. Albacete, also from the Second Division, will host Real Madrid, and Cultural Leonesa will take on Athletic Club. The last Second Division representative, Burgos, will face Valencia. The remaining pairings are between First Division teams: Betis will face Elche at La Cartuja, the venue for the final; Real Sociedad will host Osasuna; and Deportivo Alavés vs. Rayo Vallecano completed the draw.
The exact dates for the matches (which will take place between January 13th and 15th) have not yet been announced, as they depend on the results of the Super Cup, which begins this Wednesday in Saudi Arabia. The date for the Copa del Rey final, initially scheduled for April 25th at La Cartuja in Seville, is also still uncertain. Its clash with the Feria de Abril (April Fair) means this date cannot yet be confirmed in what is a very tight football calendar.
