5-11-year-olds to receive jab in mass vaccination points with prior appointment
Appointments to become available next week, with no priority given to any age group
BarcelonaDetails of Catalonia's plan to vaccinate 5-11-year-olds have become known today. As already announced, it will begin on December 15 and it will be carried out in mass vaccination points and only by appointment. The Health Department has decided not to use schools, and has decided against vaccinating older children first.
Secretary of Public Health Carmen Cabezas has announced that next Monday Catalonia will receive a first shipment of paediatric vaccines from Pfizer with 234,000 doses to start the child vaccination campaign. "We expect to receive the second shipment in early January," she said.
Covid incidence
The Secretary of Public Health, Carmen Cabezas, has warned that the groups with a cumulative incidence above 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants are children under 12, who have not yet being vaccinated, their parents (the group ranging from 30 to 49) and grandparents (60 to 69 years).
On the other hand, paediatrician Toni Soriano, a member of the Generalitat's advisory committee on covid, explained that children account for 7% of cases, that 50% have no symptoms and that, although the risk of complications is low, it is not non-existent. Only 0.21% are hospitalized and one child has died.
