BarcelonaThe historic heat affecting the country this June has also had a direct impact on the population's health. Between June 1 and 30, the Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute—the only tool that allows for a near-real-time snapshot of daily deaths in the country—monitored the number of deaths. Specifically, the deaths occurred between June 22 and 30, coinciding with the highest temperature peaks. In 21 cases, the deaths were over 65 years old, and in 13, they were over 85 years old. In Girona, 9 deaths occurred, in Lleida, 3 deaths occurred, and in Tarragona, 12 deaths occurred. During the same period last year, however, no heat-related deaths were recorded. Thus, the June data are already the highest on record, matching those of 2022.
