It depicts the transition to a police state, a synthesis of Soviet totalitarianism and oligarchic capitalism. I gather that screenwriter Emmanuel Carrère—son of historian Hélène Carrère de Encausse—has greatly irritated the Kremlin, but he has been skillful enough to guarantee the physical safety of some characters by changing their names.

Terrible figures: a contraction of more than 50% of GDP; mourning for tens of thousands of dead, more than 100,000; how to repair the damage done to 6.7 million refugees. The words of Pedro Rodríguez, professor of international relations at Complutense University, carry the weight of a pronouncement. A bombshell that forces us to reflect on Trump's threats in light of Hitler's crimes. The professor was responding to comments during a televised debate in which the panelists avoided using overly harsh labels to describe Donald Trump. They called him a capricious businessman who had pocketed $3 billion by 2025, or perhaps a narcissist leaning towards extremist positions. But no one dared to identify him as a fascist or, even worse, a Nazi. And Pedro Rodríguez, opening Anne Frank's diary, suddenly exposed the reluctance to speak plainly. These reservations are shared in the United States by figures who are, let's say, equidistant, such as journalist Robert D. Kaplan, but are by no means accepted by Nobel laureate in economics Paul Krugman or historian Robert Paxton, for whom Trump is a fascist reminiscent of Hitler.

And all this knowing, as Trump knows very well, that Orbán's Hungary is a center of espionage that has the institutions of the European Union in its sights. Trump knows that FSB agents move freely in Budapest, and he surely doesn't care. It neither moves him nor affects him. Alaska is thus emerging as the stage for the umpteenth Putin-Trump game of vagueness and ambiguity. The result would be more uncertainty, leading us to where we've perhaps never really moved: what Trump and Putin want is to agree on the future of Ukraine and Europe. Putin hasn't renounced the territorial spoils—Crimea and a good part of Donbas—a success disguised as a victory in the eyes of Russian society, and which would leave Ukraine with almost unconditional surrender: obligatory neutrality—always threatened with satellization—and no question of joining NATO.

Kaplan, a democrat, humanist and well-versed in Europe – let us remember his Balkan ghosts– declare himself, I wouldn't say an adept, but certainly sympathetic to some of Donald Trump's approaches. First of all, Kaplan, following the recent publication of his book Waste Land (RBA Editorial, 2025), on the risk of global geopolitics becoming an immense Weimar Republic—and, therefore, a threat of self-destruction for democracy—he dares to disqualify Trump as a politician, treating him as an ignoramus who represents nothing beyond social media propaganda. But when media outlets of various persuasions ask Robert Kaplan whether he sees a tyrant in the US president, the analyst and reporter says that perhaps Trump doesn't respect the judiciary, but then seems to exonerate him: "Trump isn't serious enough to be a fascist. A fascist has devised a plan, and Trump doesn't have one." Kaplan ignores or obviates statements about Trump's fascism expressed by historian Robert Paxton and Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman.

A dictator, yes, as some media outlets are beginning to point out, he has demonstrated how he uses confusion and falsehoods in the attack on Iran. Surprise. Seeing and experiencing what has happened, I'm tempted to ask: to what extent does the improvised calculation of the American autocratic businessman surpass the systematic rigidity of calculation of the old Russian kagebist? Ukraine. But beware: Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz – thanks, let's not forget, to Trump's attack – could raise the price of oil, And this would benefit Russia. It's a possibility that must be maintained. Let's go back to 2004, when Putin's regime consolidated thanks precisely to the rise in crude oil prices. It should not be forgotten that the Russian dictator wrote a doctoral thesis on the use of oil as a geostrategic tool necessary for Russia's imperial rise. Between 2000 and 2004, the Kremlin took advantage of the rise in crude oil prices and nationalized companies that had been privatized. The result was a production of between 9 and 11 million barrels per day, of which 4 million are exported.
