WashingtonThe United States and Russia agreed on Thursday to resume military-level talks following a meeting on Ukraine in Abu Dhabi, the Pentagon's USEUCOM European Command announced in a statement. The decision comes after a series of meetings between General Alexus Grynkewich, the USEUCOM commander, and senior Russian and Ukrainian military officials. The channel "will provide consistent military-to-military contact as the parties continue working toward a lasting peace," the statement said. High-level military communication was severed in 2021, shortly before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The announcement of the resumption of communications coincides with the expiration of the last treaty which limits the proliferation of nuclear weapons between Russia and the United States. Vladimir Putin has been offering Donald Trump a one-year extension of the agreement for months, but Washington has ignored him, fearful of a China that has no intention of abandoning the production of nuclear warheads.

The meeting in Abu Dhabi was the first trilateral meeting between officials from the three countries since negotiations began to end the war in Ukraine.
