The New Jersey Department of Health has announced it is investigating a possible mass exposure to measles after a person with the viral illness attended Shakira's concert on May 15. Officials added that the person lives outside of New Jersey, so there is a possibility of large-scale exposure.

This was Shakira's second concert in the United States, where she is currently touring. Women no longer cryNew Jersey's MetLife Stadium, with 82,000 seats, is the largest stadium in New York. Shakira, by the way, took the opportunity to recall her history as an immigrant in the country and sent a message of female empowerment, dancing among banknotes during the concert.

Measles spreads easily through the air, but so far no new cases have been reported in New Jersey. It should be noted that symptoms—cough, runny nose, eye inflammation, sore throat, fever, and reddish haze—do not appear until 10 to 14 days after exposure. Serious complications of measles can include pneumonia or encephalitis. Officials urged people to alert their doctors if they have symptoms before coming in for an appointment and to be up to date on their vaccinations.
