Reading Pilar Calvo's interview in the newspaper, I come across a phrase, said by her, which, with variations, many reasonable politicians and citizens say: “We are not saying that immigrants should not come, as they are necessary to fill many jobs, but that it should be done in an orderly manner”.

Immigrants have to come to fill jobs that we don't want to do. That's the idea. And I understand it's true. That there are jobs, like holding the stop sign on the road, under the sun, while working with the concrete mixer, that locals don't want. And perhaps we also don't want to do the job derived from the first one, which is to pick up the soda cans thrown on the verges by those at the stop sign. But this idea makes me uncomfortable and I don't think it's desirable either. Why should we want immigrants? So they can do shitty jobs? Well, no, I'm not that mean. And if we wanted them ourselves, would we not want them then?

Then there is another issue, which I have seen. In the construction sector, for example among the unskilled, in kitchens, in factories that need supervision, there are immigrants and also locals. Immigrants, as we know, do these jobs because there are no others or because they are saving for a taxi license. Locals do them because they haven't found anything else or because their parents sent them. The feeling of locals is usually anger towards the other who does the job that nobody wants to do, like themselves. To avoid looking like losers, like them, they present themselves as tough guys and to get over the humiliation they make fascist pronouncements from time to time.
