Since yesterday, the announcement of the name of the Nobel Peace Prize winner has been a source of excitement that is halfway between that generated by theThe Oscar goes to…" and the Champions League draw. The person responsible for so much interest is the usual king of the party, Donald Trump, who turns everything he touches into news: if he wins, because the stonemasons will start sculpting his face on Mount Rushmore, and if he doesn't win, to see what time he orders themarinasinvade Norway.

The agreement between Netanyahu and Hamas has sparked celebrations in the streets, in Gaza and in Israel. It's only natural. The bombs are gone and the hostages are being returned. This is much better than continuing the war. But everyone knows that calling it peace is an exaggeration, not only because on both sides there are inexhaustible reservoirs of hatred, political interests, and arms deals capable of derailing any agreement, but also because Israel will not be able to aspire to live in peace after the destruction and resentment it has sown among its neighbors. And a good part of this dystopia has been possible thanks to Trump's support and the iron alliance between the United States and Israel. In other words, this ended when the only thing that could have done it was imposed, after having provided all possible military aid.

The Nobel Peace Prize guidelines state that the prize is awarded "to the person who has done the most or best for fraternity among nations (ehem), the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the conclusion and promotion of peace agreements." They say nothing about awarding prizes to real estate developers keen to build a Riviera resort on a beach littered with death and rubble, or to presidents who call troops out to police their own citizens.
