Feijóo's cowardice
“My first objective is for Sánchez to leave,” said Feijóo when Aimar Bretos (Cadena SER) asked him if he would make a pact with Vox. The end justifies the means: whitewashing the extreme right. We all know that if Sánchez does not lose, he will not govern, but it is a lack of respect for the citizenry and an unusual display of his limitations that Feijóo permanently deflects the ball and, instead of explaining what he wants to do and why he wants to do it, entrusts everything to the president's attrition.
The lack of ideas and proposals, the limitation of his discourse to the permanent disqualification of the adversary is at heart a way of protecting himself from his own limits, which have led him to have to answer the most uncomfortable question: will you govern with Vox? His answer is of childish cynicism: “I will govern with Vox if the Spaniards order me to. I am a democrat.” A cowardly way of shirking his responsibility. The reality is simpler: Vox is eating into his territory and it is most likely that the PP alone will not add up. Hence the turn of the last few days, perfectly predictable to the extent that the PP is already a partner of Vox in four autonomous regions. And Feijóo has been making concessions for some time. The latest, the promise to eliminate the Ministry of Equality.
If Feijóo thought he could save himself the discomfort of depending on Abascal, he has done everything possible so that this would not happen. His inability to give meaning to a liberal conservative project as an alternative to the socialists, limiting his discourse to the disqualification of the adversary – Sánchez the traitor and corrupt – has left a space that Vox has occupied without any complex, incorporating and deploying without reservation the neo-fascist discourse that is emerging throughout Europe. And Feijóo has already taken the step of recognizing Vox as a partner and joining the authoritarian turn, at a time when the right wings are losing their democratic memory. For example, in France, where Le Pen is best positioned to capitalize on Macron's failure.
The experience of Francoism seemed that it could serve as a vaccine, but the Spanish right comes from there. And Vox has found in Feijóo the ideal partner to set its pace. And so we already have post-democratic authoritarianism at the gates of power. And meanwhile, Sánchez was having fun on La revuelta.
