The Congress of Deputies rejected Vox's proposal, supported by the PP, to ban the grim black cloth that covers some Muslim women from head to toe, complete with a mesh eye panel (quite a detail), called the burka. Junts has presented its own proposal to ban it, and the PNV proposes creating a subcommittee and calls for "a calm debate." Silvia Paneque, of the PSC, said that it generates "negativity" within Catalan society and that it must be studied from the perspective of "security" and its nature as an element "of identity that can lead to confrontation between people."
A calm debate. How ironic. I might find a calm debate about headscarves (and about Rastafarian dreadlocks and Orthodox Jewish wigs) acceptable, but a calm debate about this instrument of torture seems insane and unacceptable to me. Can there be a calm or heated debate about mistreating domestic animals? No. There is no debate. And I say about domestic animals because the women in burkas I see in Manresa, trailing behind their husbands, sometimes sitting in cafes with them spoon-feeding them, look to me like domestic animals. Exactly. Domestic animals. Nothing more.
To have a calm debate about the burka, a very important and basic element would be necessary: that the women who suffer under it could debate. Explain how they find satisfaction in covering themselves every day and constantly worrying about falling due to the lack of peripheral vision. But this, of course, isn't going to happen, because such an annihilation of the body is also an annihilation of the soul. Who will have the opportunity for a calm debate? The imams and the husbands? Come on, let's see.
