The excellent Mallorcan winery worth 4 million pesetas
Sergio Caballero and Francesc Grimalt run 4Kilos Vinícola, the winery where the Vila Viniteca Couples Tasting Award poster was presented

FelanitxSergio Caballero and Francesc Grimalt came to an agreement almost 20 years ago. Two million pesetas each. And so, in a modest way, 4Kilos Vinícola was born, one of the best Mallorcan wineries, which works with recovered native varieties and is probably not like any other winery in the world.
To explain it, we must understand who the two characters in front of us are. On the one hand, the winemaker Francesc Grimalt. The son of a sheepherder who hates sheep, although now he occasionally has them grazing in the vineyard. "But not too much, because the sheep tread too much," he says. He used to work at the Alma Negra winery, another benchmark on the island. And that is where he met Sergio Caballero.
Describing Sergio Caballero is a scary job. He makes films, makes music, founded and co-directs "a festival called Sónar," he says modestly. And he has always liked wine. Many years ago he went to visit the Alma Negra winery. They told him that they did not offer tours and that they were about to start the grape harvest. He showed up to help selflessly. Grimalt thought that it was impossible, "that he was going to be a spy." And so begins a relationship based on good humor, trust and doing things well while being very respectful of the environment "without being hippies".
Sergio Caballero already had the idea of making wine in mind, and Grimalt joined him. First in a garage and then, where they are now, in Felanitx, in a converted sheep shed. We visited and they tell us that we were getting on well little by little. They joke because it is a tiny winery and a buffoon. A Swiss Army knife aspect has created the poster for the 17th Vila Viniteca Couples Tasting Award.
The poster shows a place like the Japanese subway with two characters with several arms, tasting wines with Riedel glasses and sitting on chairs that defy the laws of physics. "I have always liked the beauty of error," explains Caballero. It is made with artificial intelligence. "I am more interested in AI than in humans," he says, adding that from a very critical position towards humanity he trusts that AI will make better decisions. "But have you seen how the world is?" he says. However, when he presented the poster to Quim Vila, owner of Vila Viniteca, he thought "either he will kill me or he will really like it." He really liked it, and that is why the presentation of the poster popular couples tasting held on March 23 (this year with a prize pool of 50,000 euros) It was held in Mallorca. A Mallorcan afternoon snack at the winery, with a tasting of its wines, and then a privileged meal with one of the best chefs on the island, Maria Solivellas, in a privileged setting, the gardens of Alfàbia.
From the Mallorcan winery you can begin a journey that began 25 million years ago, when the land we walk on emerged and understand how the Tramuntana mountain range was formed. A journey that ends with the Callet variety in the glass, tasting the wines from the 4Kilos vintages or a Grimalt Caballero. And see the labels that Caballero has had fun with. Of course, without being too hippies, because here what matters most is the wine, and it is excellent.
