BarcelonaHis landscapes are more autumnal than summery, but this matters little to fans of Shetland, which has a new season of the series available on Filmin starting this Tuesday. The detective fiction series set on the Scottish island is a favorite among subscribers of the Catalan platform and, in fact, in 2024 was the most-watched season on the streaming service. The plot of the new season centers on the disappearance of Annie Bett, Detective Tosh's friend, and her son Noah. The investigation, led by Tosh herself and her superior, Detective Inspector Ruth Calder, will uncover family and personal secrets within the Shetland community.

Shetland It began airing in the United Kingdom in 2013 and became famous thanks to its protagonist, Inspector Jimmy Perez, a widowed police inspector in charge of investigating criminal cases while trying to raise his stepdaughter and overcome the grief of her death. After seven seasons at the helm of the series, the main actor, Douglas Henshall, decided to leave the series and pass the baton to Ashley Jensen, who plays Ruth Calder, who grew up on the islands but has made a career in London. The season now being released on Filmin—the last to air in the United Kingdom so far—is the second with Jensen leading the cast.

Established protagonist

In this new season, Calder is now fully settled in Shetland. "When [Ruth] returned [to Shetland] last season, she thought she'd be there to solve the case and then return to London, to her life. But she's experiencing what sometimes happens: your homeland draws you in and makes you come back," Jensen explained to the BBC during the presentation of the new season.

One of the main themes of this new season is the emotional involvement of the detectives in the cases they investigate. This time, Tosh will be the most affected because the victim is her personal friend. "Tosh has unwavering integrity. She will always do the right thing during the investigation, and her friends may not always like that. Everyone feels affected, stressed, and distrustful, and these friendships will be tested," remarks Alison O'Donnell, who plays Tosh.

Beyond the case itself, one of the most interesting elements of the series is the relationship that develops between the two protagonists, now much closer than in the previous season. According to O'Donnell, in these new episodes it will become evident that they complement each other. "I think it's a huge vote of confidence for Tosh and the entire team that Calder has decided to stay on permanently. Last season they went through a lot and, ultimately, I think they came out of that experience with a great deal of respect for each other. I think their relationship has solidified, but there's still a sense of unease, but they have moments of searching, but all of them, all of them, moments of connection, they have moments of connection. It's true," adds O'Donnell.
