BarcelonaAt a time when citizens often feel alienated from mainstream media, local journalism is seeking to assert itself as an agent in the fight against disinformation and in maintaining the democratic health of society. The Barcelona Provincial Council held the 38th edition of its local communication awards this afternoon, recognizing initiatives that stand out for giving voice to citizens and their local communities. The gala, which included a reenactment of The War of the Worlds Orson Welles, awards were presented in six categories, with a total prize fund of 42,000 euros.

One of the stars of the evening was Josep Cuní, who received the lifetime achievement award (this award does not include a cash prize). "Alternative truths are winning the battle thanks to the algorithm, which, if it prevails, is because a part of society believes these alternative truths," the journalist warned. Cuní admitted to being aware of the pressure the media receives to achieve high audience figures, but reminded everyone that democracy can only be preserved by reviewing and evaluating the information that is published.

Beyond the lifetime achievement award, the work of local media outlets was also recognized during the gala. The Tasis-Torrent Press Award was ex aequo for The Fura, the free weekly newspaper of Alt and Baix Penedès and Garraf, and for the article International Brigades in Cambrils: Lights and shadows of international solidarity in our lands, of the Cambrils MagazineRegarding the first prize winner, the jury highlighted the commitment of its workers, who ten years ago saved the environment by forming a cooperative. As for the Cambrils MagazineThey praised the historical accuracy. In the radio category, the Rosalia Rovira award went to Espluga FM Radio for its community-based model. In the television category, the Miramar award was given to Betevé, which has a 30-year history.

Besides awarding newspapers and media outlets, specific content has also been recognized. The Maquis in the Prades MountainsCanal Reus's program won in the best video content category, while the award for best audio content went to the program The six from Ravensbrück, from the Consortium of Municipal Broadcasters of the Lands of Lleida. In the category of best multimedia content, the jury has chosen the program It happened here, from Betevé. Finally, the award for the best communication campaign by a local entity went to the campaign You hold the key, from the El Prat de Llobregat City Council.
