BarcelonaDonald Trump is showing no signs of easing tensions with European leaders; quite the contrary. The day before traveling to Switzerland to participate in the Davos Economic Forum, the US president insisted on the need to annex Greenland. "Look, we must have it," Trump emphasized when journalists asked him if he would meet with European leaders to discuss the Arctic island. "They can't protect it," he added. "Greenland is imperative for national and global security. There is no going back. We all agree on that!" he stated in a message on his Truth Social network, in which he explained that he had had a "very interesting" phone conversation about the Arctic island with the NATO Secretary General. In the same message, Trump said he agreed to "a meeting of the different parties" in Davos, but did not specify with whom or when. "The United States is the most powerful country on the planet, by far," he continued. And he took credit for it himself: "Much of this is due to the rebuilding of our armed forces during my first term, a rebuilding that continues at an even faster pace." Trump's conversation with Rutte came after Denmark proposed to the NATO Secretary General on Monday the establishment of a mission on the island. Several European allies have already announced the deployment of more troops to Greenland, but Copenhagen wants the mission to have NATO's support, even though the military alliance is controlled by the United States.

Trump has also used his social media to share alleged private messages sent by Mark Rutte and French President Emmanuel Macron. True to form, Rutte praises the US president for what he considers a success in Syria. where the regular army has taken control of the northeast of the countryGreenland, under the control of the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces and until now under Washington's protection. He also cites Gaza and Ukraine as Trump's "achievements," even though the war in the European country continues and there is no sign that a truce will be signed soon. "I am committed to finding a solution regarding Greenland," he adds.

Macron's message and AI-powered images

The tone of Emmanuel Macron's alleged message is more serious: "I don't understand what you're doing with Greenland." He asks Trump to organize a G7 meeting on Thursday in Paris, following the World Economic Forum, suggesting that representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and Denmark be invited. He also proposes a dinner in the French capital before Trump returns to the United States. Sources at the Élysée Palace have confirmed the message's authenticity.

Furthermore, Trump has used his trade threats to force Macron to integrate into the so-called Gaza Peace CouncilWhen a reporter asked him about the French president's statement that he wouldn't join, Trump retorted, "He said that? Well, nobody wants him because he'll be out of office soon." But he added, "I'll put a 200% tariff on their wines and champagnes and they'll join, but they don't have to."

In addition to the screenshot of Macron and Rutte's messages, Trump also posted several AI-generated images to underscore his intentions regarding the Arctic island. One of the images is an edited version of a photo taken last August when European leaders visited Washington with Volodymyr Zelensky to demand security guarantees for Ukraine. In the fake image posted on Truth Social, the map showing the front line in Ukraine is replaced with a map where the US, Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela are covered with the American flag.

He also posted an illustration depicting Trump planting the American flag in Greenland, flanked by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. In the foreground of the illustration is a sign that reads "Greenland: US territory, est. 2026".
