The cousin of the poet J.V. Foix dies and leaves the two Foix pastry shops of Sarrià with sorrow
Jordi Madern was also the promoter of the J.V. Foix Foundation
Sarrià/BarcelonaJordi Madern, cousin of the poet J.V. Foix, with two Foix patisseries in the Sarrià neighborhood, died yesterday afternoon at the age of 88. An energetic man, he had worked until the last days in the patisseries, where he attended to customers who asked for him or stayed in the office. In the workshop, located on Carrer Major de Sarrià, he has several pastry chefs, including Joe Moretones and Oriol Madern Mas, his brother, retired, and a nephew, Albert Madern, on whom he relied to continue the business when he was no longer there.
The Foix patisserie has been in the news in recent years for winning the chocolate monas contest with a striking monkey that everyone praised because it looked like it was about to speak. In addition, the patisserie has also created a new sweet, the ensaïmattone, a mixture of ensaïmada with a panettone dough interior. Both creations, the mona and the ensaïmattone, are the work of pastry chef Joe Moretones, who works there during the busy periods of the workshop: Christmas and Easter. On the other hand, traditional patisserie specialties such as the famous petxines and boires, always covered in chocolate, are a constant creation of the workshop, and two of the great sweet attractions of Foix de Sarrià.
Ice cream and boires
At this time of year, mists and scallops compete with artisanal ice creams. Anyone who has ever entered La Foix knows they will find something they like: sweet or savory, because at the establishment on Carrer Major in Sarrià there is also a counter selling charcuterie.
Jordi Madern was also the driving force behind the J.V. Foix Foundation, dedicated to the complete classification and cataloging of his work, the collection of correspondence, the establishment of a generous archive of graphic, phonographic, and artistic material, and the organization of Foix's library, about 1,600 volumes out of the more than 5,000 he donated to the library of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans.
The funeral Mass for Jordi Madern will be tomorrow, Sunday, at 9 a.m. at the church of Sant Vicenç de Sarrià. And the wake, today, Saturday, at the chapel of La Puríssima, inside the same church of Sant Vicenç, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
